Worthington starts talks with IFA
Irish FA chiefs have started contract talks with Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington, but they say a deal is still some way off. It is believed the IFA is keen to secure the services of the former Norwich City manager on a fresh two-year contract. However, on Wednesday the association reported that negotiations were at a very early stage. Worthington took over when Lawrie Sanchez resigned earlier this year. Although Northern Ireland failed to qualify for the Euro 2008 finals, they did finish a creditable third in their group. It is understood Worthington has impressed his employers and that a new deal will eventually be agreed. If it is, Worthington's first task will involve sorting out dates for the World Cup qualifying campaign. Northern Ireland have been drawn in the same group as the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and San Marino.
