World Cup trophy visits England
For the first time in its history, the only solid gold Fifa World Cup trophy is making an appearance in England. England striker Wayne Rooney will be in London to get a glimpse of the trophy he wants to lift in the World Cup finals in Germany this summer. The tour began in Accra, Ghana and will take in 31 cities in 28 countries. The event by Coca-Cola marks the first extensive tour of the real World Cup trophy, which is rarely seen outside the nation winning each tournament. The tour lasts for three months before reaching its final destination in Rome on 10 April. England won the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966 but have never lifted Fifa's new trophy, which was introduced in 1974. The World Cup trophy cannot be won outright, as the regulations state that it must remain in Fifa's possession. The winners retain it only for a specified period and are then awarded a replica that is gold-plated, rather than solid gold, bearing a plaque with the year, host and winner.
