Wembley in 2008 Euro final race
The Football Association has put Wembley forward to host the 2008 Champions League final. England's new showpiece stadium, which is set to open later in the year after a £757m facelift, will face competition from eight other grounds across Europe. Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium and the City of Manchester Stadium are challenging to host the Uefa Cup final. All of the nominated venues will now be assessed by Uefa before a decision on a host is made in October. Italy, Germany and Portugal are lodging two bids apiece for the Champions League, with Russia and Spain also in the running. The Italian Football Federation has nominated Rome's Olympic Stadium and Milan's Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, more commonly known as the San Siro. The Allianz Arena in Munich and Olympic Stadium in Berlin, two key venues for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, have been put forward by Germany. Porto's Dragao Stadium and Lisbon's Stadium of Light represent Portugal, while Moscow has put forward its 84,000 capacity Luzhniki Olympic Stadium and Spain has named Seville's Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium as their candidate. Along with those in the running for the Champions League final, six venues have put their names forward to host the 2008 Uefa Cup final. As well as the grounds at Manchester City and Middlesbrough, Hamburg's AOL Arena, the Ramat-Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv, Israel, Real Murcia's Nueva Condomina ground and Fenerbahce's stadium in Istanbul are competing for the honour.
