Waddock relishes rare Rangers result
QPR boss Gary Waddock was a relieved man after watching his team gain their first victory in seven months.
First-half goals from Martin Rowlands and Nick Ward - his first for the club - helped Rangers to a 2-0 win over Southend, ending a run of 13 Championship matches without a win.
This was only the third victory Rangers have tasted since Waddock took over in February, and only their second at Loftus Road, but they showed enough to suggest they can confound their status as one of the favourites for relegation.
\"To win again is a fantastic feeling,\" Waddock admitted. \"I've not experienced it too much since I took over in February.
\"But it's something I hope to taste more often with this group of players.\"
Waddock gave debuts to defender Zesh Rehman and forward Dexter Blackstock, signed this week from Fulham and Southampton respectively, and both turned in impressive performances.
Waddock has made considerable changes to his squad during a summer of financial difficulty, and he said: \"I want to be judged on the performances of this group of players.
\"I want to play a passing game - everyone can see that - and I think the signs are encouraging for the future.
\"Dexter and Zesh both had really good games, and some of our football in the first half was outstanding.
\"But now we have to learn to maintain that standard for longer periods, not just for 45 minutes but for 60 or 75 minutes.
\"You rarely dominate a game for 90 minutes, and Southend are a good team who came back into the game in the second half.\"
