Trapattoni leaves Benfica on top
Benfica coach Giovanni Trapattoni confirmed his resignation after guiding the Lisbon club to their first league title in 11 years.
Trapattoni, 66, stepped down after expressing his desire to return to Italy to be with his family.
Benfica's win was Trapattoni's ninth title in a long career with some of Europe's top clubs, including six with Turin giants Juventus.
The former Bayern Munich coach resigned one year into a two-year contract.
Trapattoni's decision received the backing of Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho who revealed he would do likewise if forced to choose.
Mourinho told Portuguese sports daily A Bola: "It is a complicated situation, which I hope I will never have to go through.
"It is complicated but if it was me I'd have no doubts. What would I do? Leave! Between family and football... family."
Trapattoni has been linked with a return to Italy with Lazio where he would have the task of reviving the fortunes of the Rome club.
