Terry sets sights on Euro glory
England skipper John Terry says he will not be satisfied with just leading the national side to Euro 2008. A win over Russia at Wembley on Wednesday will put England's stuttering qualification campaign back on track. But Terry said: "I want to be a captain to be remembered - that means taking us to the Euros and really giving ourselves a chance to win something. "To be the captain and do that would be amazing. We are a long way off but hopefully the possibility is there." Saturday's 3-0 victory over Israel moved England to within a point of second-placed Russia, with four qualification games remaining. Terry says the performance has given the squad and fans a renewed confidence almost a year after their qualification hopes were severely dented by a defeat in Croatia and a draw at home to Macedonia. He added: "I think's it vital to get the belief of everyone. There's nothing better when you are sitting at home watching the fans saying how well the England team are playing. "When I have not been involved in games, I have travelled to a lot of games and you see these supporters coming in from work, picking their kids up from school and coming to games in the evening. "I was like that as a kid. My mum and dad saved up for tickets. I know exactly how much it means to them and exactly how much it means to everyone in England. "When England play well it gives everyone a lift. We all know that. "People go into work on Monday mornings very high after a good result, so it is key. "We have said a lot of things too many times - but this is the crunch now and we need to let our football, our results and our performances do the talking. "Russia are a very good side, it is going to be a very tough game - but if we can win again hopefully we can get the belief of not only the fans but of everyone in the country. Then we can all move on together." Terry has promised a rousing England performance against a Russia side led by one-time England coaching target Guus Hiddink. He added: "If you give teams time to play there are so many world-class players in their team that they will find a pass to hurt you or create something from nothing. "But if you get in amongst them and get in their faces a little bit and put them under pressure they make mistakes. "We did that against Israel, put them right under pressure, didn't let them play at all, didn't give them any time on the ball. "It rushes them into a decision that maybe they wouldn't have chosen if they had a bit more time on the ball. "Russia are technically very good and very good on the ball but if we can do that against them, then we can stop Russia from playing." With four games to go in Group E, England are at a pivotal point in their qualification campaign and coach McClaren is confident they can rise to the occasion. "Can we win every game? I think so," stated McClaren. "If we play like we did on Saturday then we have every chance. "It is down to the nitty-gritty now. We can't afford any slip-ups and players know that. "It is like the run-in to a Championship title or being in the quarter-finals or semi-finals of a cup. We can see the finish line and that is when you need total concentration. Our players are good at that. "We have got to make sure we perform and play at a tempo like we did in the first 20 minutes against Israel. The crowd got behind the players and they will play a big part as well. "A win against Russia would put us in a very good position in the group." Meanwhile, England midfielder Steven Gerrard has called for the national side to end its recent record of under-achievement. The Liverpool star said: "This is the best England squad I have been involved in since I started with England in 2000. "We have under-achieved of late and we need to deliver. With the quality we've got I don't think the quarter-finals is enough. We should be doing better." Croatia top the group with 20 points from eight matches followed by Russia on 18. England are level on 17 points with Israel who have played one game more.
