Wise in talks to be Swindon boss Dennis Wise is in negotiations to become Swindon Town's new manager, reports Sir Stanley.
The club are hoping to announce him as their new boss by the end of the week.
The 39-year-old former England international has mainly played in the Premiership and lists among his clubs Chelsea, Wimbledon and Coventry.
Wise's only managerial experience came at Millwall, where in 18 months in charge he lead the team to the FA Cup final against Manchester United.
It is not yet known if Wise wants to continue playing.
The move for Wise is a big turnaround for Swindon, who until very recently were insisting that Iffy Onuora would remain as manager.
If Wise agrees terms with the Robins, it is unclear if Onuora, Alan Reeves or Ian Woan would have a future at the County Ground.

Swindon confirm Wise as manager Dennis Wise has been installed as Swindon player-manager after agreeing personal terms on Monday.
The 39-year-old will be assisted at the County Ground by former Chelsea team-mate Gustavo Poyet.
"I have been impressed with Swindon in the meetings we have had and liked what I heard," Wise explained.
"There will not be loads of money to spend. I have targets I would like to bring in and we will have to wheel and deal to a certain extent."
Wise says he and Poyet will register as players and be available to play but hopes they are not needed.
"I want a fit and strong side because once you have that you have a mentally strong side and that will help us no end.
"I am sure the players will do well for us and keep us out of the side but because we will have a relatively small squad the option will be there."
Former boss Iffy Onoura was offered the chance to stay in a reduced capacity but has turned down that opportunity and has left the club.
He said: "While I am disappointed, I understand that the club want that big name to put bums on seats early in the season, which is important.
"My argument was, and still is, that a longer term stability was important to the club. The club wanted to go a different way and we have held a frank and honest discussion.
"There was an offer to keep me at the club, but in reality the new manager wouldn't want the former manager sitting in the wings.
"I don't think that would have been beneficial and there would have been a little bit of pride at stake too."
Wise's only previous managerial experience was at Millwall, where in 18 months in charge he lead the team to the FA Cup final against Manchester United.
He aims to use his contacts in the game to help him during his stint at the County Ground.
"There are a lot of people I have worked under at all levels, who I can pick up the phone and ask for help if needs be," Wise added.

O'Hanlon closes on Swindon deal Swindon Town skipper Sean O'Hanlon is set to agree a new contract within the next fortnight, according to deputy chairman Mark Devlin.
"We are now very close to concluding a deal," he told the club website.
"I would imagine that would be done and dusted within 10 to 14 days, with Sean staying here at Swindon.
"(Manager) Dennis Wise will be looking for a bit of experience, but we will not be paying ageing Premiership players to see out their careers here."

Peacock steps up comeback efforts Swindon's Lee Peacock says his recovery from knee surgery is going well as he bids to be fit for pre-season.
The 29-year-old striker tried to play through the pain barrier at the end of last season in an attempt to save the Robins from relegation.
Peacock told Sir Stanley: "I'm in the gym on my own everyday doing bits and bobs.
"It's going well, the knee is getting stronger and I'm being able to do more and more work on it."

\"If the players are working as hard as I think they will be under Dennis, they will be glad of a good massage.\"

Tribunal to rule on O'Hanlon fee Swindon will discover how much they will receive from Milton Keynes Dons for defender Sean O'Hanlon on Tuesday, when a Football League tribunal sits.
The 23-year-old rejected a new deal at the County Ground this summer and signed for the Dons earlier this month.
However, as he is under 24, the Robins are entitled to a fee for the former England Under-20 international, which will be determined by the tribunal.
O'Hanlon joined Swindon from Everton in 2004, after an initial loan spell.

Ince eyes Swindon coaching role Paul Ince has held talks with Swindon boss Dennis Wise with a view to joining the club in a coaching capacity.
The 38-year-old was recently overlooked for the manager's post at Wolves following Glenn Hoddle's resignation.
The former Manchester United and Liverpool midfielder, who spent four years at Wolves, left Molineux after the arrival of new boss Mick McCarthy.
Wise said: \"He is a good friend of mine and we have had a chat about the situation and it's left with him now.\"
The Robins manager added: \"I am sure there will be a few bigger clubs after him but it's a little thought we have had and we will see what happens now.\"
Ince criticised Wolves for allowing him to leave and stated that he was keen to move into coaching.
His playing contract at Molineux expired in June.

Wise to sit out opening matches Swindon boss Dennis Wise says the demands of being manager mean that he will not be fit enough to play in the first few matches of the season.
Wise told Sir Stanley: \"There was so much that we needed to do, and we wanted to go through so much with the players that you can't train properly.
\"It's impossible to be fit although I've joined in a couple of sessions, but for me it's nowhere near enough.
\"I probably need about two weeks worth of good work, and then I'll be ready.\"

Wise hails star keeper Brezovan Dennis Wise hailed Swindon's debutant keeper Peter Brezovan, who saved two penalties in the 1-0 win at Hartlepool in Wise's first game as manager.
He said: \"Peter was fantastic - he was congratulated by everyone at the end.
\"The bus driver speaks a little Polish, so he has passed on some information for us. They were both great saves, but the one off the line was unbelievable.
\"We played very well in the first half, but were a bit naive with the penalties - there was no need to give them away.\"

Wise grateful for 'lucky' winner Swindon boss Dennis Wise says his side were worthy winners against Rochdale - their third successive league victory.
Alan Goodall's own goal gifted the points to the Robins and Wise's men could even afford to miss two penalties after the break.
\"I told the lads to be patient and in the second half we got more,\" Wise told the club's website.
\"We deserved to win but the own goal was bizarre - although it was a nice kind of bizarre in our favour.\"

Swindon 1-0 Rochdale Dennis Wise enjoyed a third straight win since becoming Swindon boss thanks to Alan Goodall's bizarre own goal.
Rochdale keeper Matt Gilks was helpless as Goodall headed in from close range on the stroke of half-time.
Gilks prevented a more emphatic win for Swindon by saving two penalties in the second half, firstly from Christian Roberts and then from Paul Evans.
Rochdale failed to find any rhythm and all they could muster in the second half was a shot by Adam Rundle.
