Birmingham's Cameron Jerome is banned after the red card he received on his debut against Colchester. DJ Campbell and Mikael Forssell are doubts and Radhi Jaidi is rested.

Sunderland 0-1 Birmingham
Mikael Forssell's coolly converted penalty gave Birmingham maximum points and consigned Niall Quinn's Sunderland to their second defeat in five days. Forssell slotted in after Clive Clarke marred his Black Cats debut with a reckless tackle on Damien Johnson. Liam Lawrence, who also had a goal disallowed for offside, should have put the home side ahead early on but missed a glorious headed chance. Nicklas Bendtner also had a goal ruled out for offside for Blues. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunderland manager Nial Quinn said: \"I'm not as disappointed as I was on Sunday because we played for the full 90 minutes against arguably the best team in the division. \"The players showed me heart and it means I can now work on a bit more creativity on the training ground. \"That's what we lacked and I'm looking to bring in players to give us that.\" Birmingham manager Steve Bruce \"All in all I am delighted with the attitude of the players,\" said Bruce after a second win on the trot. \"It's been a tough summer for obvious reasons but you've seen a new team trying to take shape. \"To come here and lay a marker down, it was a terrific result. I am absolutely thrilled with the whole lot of them.\" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunderland: Alnwick, Delap, Cunningham, Caldwell (Clarke 29), Danny Collins, Miller, Whitehead, Leadbitter, Lawrence (Stead 74), Murphy, Stephen Elliott.Subs Not Used: Wright, Ward, Kevin Smith. Black Cats chase Foxes defender
Leicester City have been approached by fellow Championship side Sunderland regarding their defender Alan Maybury. The 28-year-old joined the Foxes for an undisclosed fee from Hearts in January 2005 and has been a regular in the first-team since arriving. \"I have been informed by chief executive Tim Davies we had received an approach from Sunderland,\" Foxes boss Rob Kelly told the club website. \"Tim is currently speaking to Sunderland on that matter.\"

Sunderland 2-3 Plymouth
Nick Chadwick scored the winner as Sunderland slumped to a third straight Championship defeat under Niall Quinn. The visitors had to come from behind after Daryl Murphy scored from a tight angle on one minute, and it was David Norris who levelled with a superb lob. Plymouth went ahead when Barry Hayles punished Kenny Cunningham for a poor backpass but Sunderland hit back after the break with a Stephen Elliot header. Then on 82 minutes Chadwick sealed the points when he struck with a low shot. Sunderland's hesitancy in defence which preceded Chadwick's decisive strike was on show for most of the game. The Black Cats were hardly helped when Clive Clarke's debut ended prematurely in the 20th minute as he exited holding his groin. Hayles and Norris should have both notched more than once but neither could finish off chances when one-on-one with keeper Ben Alnwick. Sunderland's Chris Brown headed against the bar in the 66th minute - it would have put the home side 3-2 up, but instead the Black Cats proved all out of luck again. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunderland manager Niall Quinn \"I'm very disappointed. It's a game we should have won. \"It was a wonderful chance to get going and turn a corner, but it was awful at times and we lacked bottle to take the situation by the scruff of the neck. \"The players have to take on responsibility and as a unit we didn't do that. Everyone and his dog knows we have to strengthen the squad.\" Plymouth manager Ian Holloway \"Obviously I haven't been here long but I'm enjoying every minute. \"The boys have fantastic spirit. I'm very proud. \"I said at half-time that I wouldn't want to be in the other dressing room. The fans weren't happy and there was a lot of negativity out there.\" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunderland: Alnwick, Delap, Cunningham, Clarke (Wright 20), Danny Collins, Lawrence (Stead 58), Whitehead, Leadbitter, Miller (Brown 63), Stephen Elliott, Murphy. Subs Not Used: Ward, Neill Collins. Goals: Murphy 1, Stephen Elliott 67. Three straight defeats now. Will Quinny sack himself?

SirStanleyBowles- 08-14-2006

Al I think that Quinn shouldn't have made himself manager, to be honest I thought he would have taken the backseat and overlooked what went on at the club....I think that to be successful you need a manager AND a chairman not both from one man! surely a man in each position is better for the club.I really thought that he was going to name a decent manager not take it on himself. :?

SirStanleyBowles- 08-14-2006

What do you recon Val? :)

SirStanleyBowles- 08-14-2006

Yeah I agree, Im shocked he couldnt find a decent manager, and according to reports many fans left the ground very early recently and to be honest I dont blame them...the supporters were uplifted by the return of one of their sons but the man is taking on too much, but I feel booing the team wont help matters and should stick by the team even now......what I would say is give the side a chance Im sure the squad will be improved and surely things will get better..lets face it they are up and down like a yoyo but the right combination will be found soon

SirStanleyBowles- 08-16-2006

Al mate ,well I must say your a little premature!!  and Im sure Val will have something to say!! watch out for the fallout!

Southend v Sunderland
Southend boss Steve Tilson is expected to name an unchanged side for the fourth straight match. Goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan should be available after recovering from a nasty facial injury. Former Newcastle defender Robbie Elliot and Spanish midfielder Arnau Riera could make their debuts as Sunderland continue to struggle with injuries. Tommy Miller and Chris Brown are the latest players to be sidelined after taking knocks and they will miss out.

Southend 3-1 Sunderland
Niall Quinn's disastrous start to his managerial career reached crisis point as defeat by newly-promoted Southend sent Sunderland bottom. Adam Barrett headed the Shrimpers in front on the stroke of half-time and then stooped to make it 2-0 after the hosts failed to deal with a free-kick. Lee Bradbury sealed a fine win when he tucked away Mark Gower's low cross. Jon Stead grabbed a consolation but it failed to lift Sunderland, who are without a point in four games. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Southend boss Steve Tilson: \"I'm pleased to get another win. Also, Freddy Eastwood didn't score and we've still come up with three goals so that's pleasing. \"It doesn't matter if you're Sunderland or Colchester or Southend, it's tough when you are losing games to get out of a bad run.\" Sunderland manager Niall Quinn: \"There's a percentage of players in the dressing room who are simply not good enough. \"We've put our arm round them and looked after them over the past few weeks but the losing mentality is rampant in this dressing room. \"When you see that you realise some just aren't going to make the cut.\" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Southend: Flahavan, Francis, Prior (Peter 38), Barrett, Hammell, Campbell-Ryce (Lawson 73), Guttridge, Maher, Gower, Bradbury, Eastwood (Hunt 84). Subs Not Used: Cole, Collis. Goals: Barrett 45, 68, Bradbury 89. Sunderland: Alnwick, Wright, Neill Collins, Cunningham, Robbie Elliott, Stephen Elliott, Leadbitter (Riera 55), Whitehead, Delap (Kyle 70), Stead, Murphy. Subs Not Used: Lawrence, Ward, Danny Collins. Booked: Whitehead, Wright. Goals: Stead 90. Att: 9,848 Ref: J Singh (Middlesex).

Bolton dismiss new Allardyce link
Bolton chairman Phil Gartside has again denied claims that Sam Allardyce will be leaving the Reebok Stadium to take over at Sunderland. Reports earlier this summer suggested the struggling Black Cats were targeting the Bolton boss and the rumours resurfaced on Saturday. But Gartside told Radio Manchester: \"Sam will not be going to Sunderland. \"I did not even bother ringing him about the speculation. It is just wasting his time and my time.\" Niall Quinn is currently combining his role as chairman of Sunderland with the managerial position but his side have suffered an awful start to the season, losing their first four games. He has insisted he is prepared to step down - if the club can find the right person to take over. \"If someone comes along to take the club forward, I promise there is no pride here and I'll walk,\" he said after Sunderland's latest defeat, which was a 3-1 loss at Southend. \"But whoever comes in will have a real job turning this around.\"
