Sporting Lisbon v Rangers (Thu)
Rangers expect Carlos Cuellar to be fit for Thursday's Uefa Cup quarter-final second leg against Sporting Lisbon. The 26-year-old defender has been suffering from a virus. But Rangers' medical team say they are confident that he will play at the Jose Alvelade Stadium, where Rangers will be without the suspended David Weir. Striker Daniel Cousin has recovered from a broken jaw, while Sporting will be without central defender Anderson Polga, who has torn a thigh muscle. Brazil international Polga was injured during Sunday's 2-0 victory over Braga, a result that puts Sporting fourth in Portugal's Liga. Sporting medical director Jose Gomes Pereira told Uefa's website: "Polga has probably torn a muscle in his right thigh. "He will undergo tests in the next 48 hours to evaluate the problem and to determine how long he will be out, but he is definitely out of the Rangers game." Favourite to replace the 29-year-old in Sporting's starting line-up is his compatriot, Gladstone, a 23-year-old on a season-long loan from Cruzeiro. Rangers will also require a reshuffle in central defence after Weir picked up a yellow card in the 0-0 first-leg draw at Ibrox. To also lose Cuellar would have been a major blow for Rangers. The Spaniard has been the Glasgow club's star performer this season, leading to his inclusion along with three Celtic players in the players' player of the year awards shortlist. Cuellar put in an uncharacteristically poor performance and contributing an own goal in Sunday's 3-3 draw with Dundee United. But it was later disclosed that he has been suffering from a virus. "Cuellar will take his usual place in the side on Thursday night and he will travel with the team tomorrow morning," said a Rangers statement.
