Shorey and Smith ready to start
England could hand a debut to Reading defender Nicky Shorey for the friendly against Brazil on Friday at the new Wembley Stadium.
Manchester United's Alan Smith is set to partner Michael Owen up front.
Coach Steve McClaren could use Shorey and Liverpool's Jamie Carragher to rest Phil Neville and Wayne Bridge for the crucial Euro 2008 qualifier in Estonia.
Rio Ferdinand, Michael Dawson, Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, Jonathan Woodgate and Micah Richards are all injured.
Ferdinand and Dawson pulled out of the England squad to face Brazil and Estonia because of groin injuries, while first-choice full-backs Ashley Cole and Gary Neville did not make the squad because of injuries.
It leaves McClaren short of defenders with Carragher likely to occupy the right-back berth, and Tottenham's Ledley King set to partner skipper John Terry at the heart of the defence.
Bridge is unlikely to be risked as he has been suffering with a hip injury, although it is hoped he will be fit for the Estonia game on Wednesday.
If Shorey plays he will become Reading's first England international for over 100 years.
Victory in Tallinn is imperative, not only to England's chances of reaching next summer's finals in Austria and Switzerland but also to McClaren's hopes of remaining in a job.
David Beckham is set to cap his England comeback by starting in both games.
The former captain is set to play after Tottenham's Aaron Lennon withdrew from the squad because of a knee injury.
He will occupy his usual place on the right of midfield, with Joe Cole on the left.
Owen Hargreaves' absence through injury deprives England of his holding skills, and McClaren will partner Steve Gerrard and Frank Lampard in the centre of midfield.
Beckham has not played for England since he came off injured in the World Cup quarter-final defeat at the hands of Portugal last July, after which he announced his resignation as captain.
Newcastle forward Owen looks certain to start up front, either on his own or alongside Manchester United's Smith.
