The period of recuperation should allow his bulging discs to heal.
Meanwhile striker Adam Proudlock, 24, says his preparation for the new season have gone well as he recovers from a long-term ankle injury.

"The situation is not that good with South Africa, but I don't really know what the next step is."
O'Brien recently moved to Hillsborough on a three-year deal after rejecting a new deal at Livingston.

He previously managed Portsmouth and Weymouth.
However, he is now looking for the 14th League club of his career following spells with Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Aldershot, Cambridge, Luton, Birmingham, Leicester, Portsmouth, Wolves, Millwall, Brighton, Brentford and Wycombe.

QPR 0-0 Sheff Wed QPR ended a difficult week with a poor goalless draw against Sheffield Wednesday, who had John Hills sent off on 77 minutes for two yellow cards.
Kevin Gallen should have scored when put through by Tommy Doherty on 22 minutes but hit a weak shot straight at Owls goalkeeper David Lucas.
Lucas then saved a Gareth Ainsworth volley, while Paul Furlong headed over.
David Graham volleyed Wednesday's best chance over and Lucas did well to save Gallen's close-range shot at the death.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QPR boss Ian Holloway:
"Some players showed disappointment before the fat lady had picked up her mic and started to sing.
"Show disappointment in the dressing room. It takes only a second to score a goal."
Owls manager Paul Sturrock:
"We've no rhythm because injuries mean I can't get the players on the training ground - but I'm proud of their performance tonight.
"We worked hard on the shape in training, and that benefited us.
"But I was disappointed with Hills. His sending-off was a bit of a zany moment."

Eagles scored after Shaun Derry conceded a needless foul with just eight minutes gone.
Neil Sullivan brilliantly saved a David Graham header, while Leeds substitute Robbie Blake shot inches wide.
Paul Butler then headed over and David Lucas saved Rob Hulse's header for Leeds, while Wednesday's Chris Brunt hit the post from 20 yards.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sheffield Wednesday boss Paul Sturrock:
"We played it down the channels and we got crosses in and we caused them problems.
"They came back at us and caused us all sorts of concerns but the defence held firm and the team has been absolutely magnificent.
"We got back to what we were good at last year - getting the ball down and getting in people's faces."
Leeds boss Kevin Blackwell:
"They caught us cold. One or two of our lads didn't get up to derby pace and it was a really poor goal to lose the game to.
"But all credit to them. They played with a tremendous spirit and got great backing from the crowd.
"If you get them going here it's a tremendous place, but we created enough chances to get something."

Sheff Wed 1-2 Millwall Two Sheffield United old boys earned Millwall a second away win of the week as they moved off the foot of the table and Wednesday replaced them there.
Barry Hayles opened the scoring early in the second half after a goalmouth scramble, before Graham Coughlan equalised with his first Owls goal.
Carl Asaba, on for the injured Ben May, won it when he headed in Jermaine Wright's cross with 16 minutes left.
Wednesday's Burton O'Brien and Richard Wood went close but Millwall held on.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Paul Sturrock
It's hard to put your finger on why we've made such a sluggish start.
"Maybe I should have freshened the team up a bit. My players didn't want to say much in the dressing room, their heads were down.
"I thought we were off the pace. Our link-up play to the forwards was poor and our midfield was poor. We've just got to roll our sleeves up and make it better."
Millwall manager Colin Lee on strikers Hayles and Asaba
"The pair developed an understanding and looked pretty dangerous.
"Barry scored a goal from a set play we worked on in training and Asaba, who has had a bad time since he's been here in terms of fitness, scored a terrific goal.
"I've got full praise for my players. We didn't panic, played our football and played with a lot of composure at times."

Royle ponders Proudlock transfer Ipswich manager Joe Royle is interested in signing Adam Proudlock after his contract was terminated by Sheffield Wednesday for disciplinary reasons.
Proudlock left Wednesday for what boss Paul Sturrock called "several breaches" of the club's code of conduct.
Royle said: "I remember Adam as a young player at Wolves and he impressed me. I know things have gone a bit awry for him but players can be rehabilitated."
The Ipswich boss is still waiting to hear if another loan deal can go ahead.
But he said he may press ahead with a deal for Proudlock if that move fails to materialise.
"Adam's got something," said Royle. "I am well aware of his ability and his availability after speaking to Wednesday in order to find out his situation.
"He is a free agent but at this moment in time I have not taken my interest any further."
