Sanchez eyes third place in group
Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez is targeting a third-place finish in World Cup Group Six and a better seeding in the next European Championship draw. Sanchez had his sights on fourth spot going into the back-to-back games against Azerbaijan and England but the two wins have changed his thinking. "We can catch Austria who we play last. I think England will beat them in the next round of matches," said Sanchez. "If we could finish third it would be a magnificent achievement." Northern Ireland's headline-grabbing 1-0 win over England has given football in Northern Ireland a huge lift. And Sanchez is eagerly looking ahead to the on-field benefits. "Getting third place in the group would put us in a good position for the Europeans because hopefully there will be one or two teams in our group that we are capable of beating," Sanchez told Five Live. "If we can do that and upset some of the bigger teams we can get closer to qualifying for a major championship again." Northern Ireland's next World Cup qualifier is at home to Wales on 8 October with the final game away to Austria four days later.
