Owen in the dark on England start
England coach Fabio Capello refused to be drawn on whether Michael Owen would win back his starting place for England in the friendly against France.
The 28-year-old striker was left on the bench for Capello's first game in charge against Switzerland.
"All the players are important players but it depends on the type of game it is who's best." he said.
"At the moment I'm experimenting and I'm trying to see how I can make the team play and what choices I can make."
Owen, who has scored 40 goals for England, recently expressed his fear that he could be dropped from the squad altogether as a result of Newcastle's poor Premier League form.
However, he will vie with Wayne Rooney, Peter Crouch and Theo Walcott for a place up front against France.
Rooney started the game against Switzerland in a lone striker's role ahead of a five-man midfield.
Capello says he expects a stern test against France at the Stade de France.
"It's certainly going to be our hardest match because France are a good team and we're playing at the Stade de France, where there will be a good atmosphere," he said.
"It will be a very good test, especially considering the group I have could be a good base to start."
