Thompson glee over Canoville coup
Notts County manager Steve Thompson says new signing Lee Canoville is the ideal man to help ease the problem created by Mike Edwards' injury. Edwards faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after breaking his right leg and dislocating his ankle. But Thompson told the club's official website: "Lee's a good player who I have seen many play many times. "He can play right-back or centre-back, he is familiar in both positions, he is mobile and is also a good athlete." Thompson added: "We've been looking for someone with a bit of versatility and who is also quite mobile with a bit of pace."

Notts winger Weston out for month
Notts County winger Myles Weston is facing four weeks out after tearing a hamstring in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Brentford at Meadow Lane. "We sent Myles for an MRI scan, and it reveals he has a tear," boss Steve Thompson told the Magpies' website. County must also do without veteran striker Jason Lee for three games after he was given a suspension at a Football Association disciplinary hearing. Brentford had complained to the FA about an incident in Saturday's game. However, better news for Thompson is that teenage forward Stef Frost has returned to training after a groin injury.

Beesley added to Magpies backroom
Notts County have added Paul Beesley to their backroom staff at Meadow Lane. Beesley, 42, made over 500 league appearances for 10 clubs as a central defender, including five-year spells with Wigan and Sheffield United. His new role will see him helping out with scouting, where he had already been involved, and at training. Beesley will also take on the duties of kit man, following the departure of kit man Mike Ainslie, who has left the club after three years on the staff. As well as Wigan and the Blades, Beesley also played for Leyton Orient, Leeds, Manchester City, Port Vale, West Brom, Blackpool, Chester and Stalybridge. Since then, he served on the coaching staff at Nottingham Forest, before being appointed as Leeds' Under-18 coach in February.

Notts County rue wasted chances
Notts County assistant manager John Gannon blamed his side's poor finishing for their 1-1 draw against Morecambe. He said: "In the first half I thought we played the best we have so far this season, creating numerous opportunities but we just didn't take them. "We didn't take one in particular and missing golden chances like we did put pressure on ourselves. "When you are playing well you have to take your chances, otherwise it can prove to be costly."

Thompson content despite defeat
Notts County boss Steve Thompson felt his side played well despite them losing 1-0 against Leyton Orient in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. "We took the game seriously and it was a good opportunity and for us to give players a real run-out," said Thompson. "Lawrie Dudfield had a stomach upset at the weekend so it was important for him to get a game as it was Gary Silk, Spencer Weir-Daley and Hector Sam. "I was disappointed with the result but not the performance and the football."

Wilkinson and Moore leave County
Howard Wilkinson has resigned his position as technical director of Notts County - hours after chairman Jeff Moore announced his own departure. Wilkinson managed the Magpies in 1982/83 before spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds and Sunderland, and a stint as the FA's technical director. He returned as a non-executive director of County in 2004, becoming technical director in June 2006. But the club announced on Monday afternoon that he had resigned. Fellow director Joanna Adams - former commercial director of the Football Conference who had been on the Notts board since June - submitted her notice of resignation at the same time as Wilkinson. The duo's resignations came on the same day that Moore revealed that he would relinquish the chairmanship once the shareholders and board had elected his successor. "When I was first approached to become chairman at the end of the 2005-06 season, I was surprised and flattered," Moore told County's website. "But my position as chief executive of the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) is a full-time role. "I no longer feel it is fair to Notts County to continue as chairman while being unable to afford the requisite amount of time." County have also launched a five-year business plan entitled "Vision 2012", in which the club is aiming to reach the Championship within five years.

Thompson relieved with first win
Notts County manager Steve Thompson was relieved to secure his side's first league win of the season as County overcame Dagenham and Redbridge 1-0. He said: "I am relieved as we all know that it has been a difficult week. "We had to make our own luck and we have a hard-working set of players and I am pleased for them and the fans too. "I know the frustrations of the fans that we bring everyone back to defend set-pieces but we've worked on it and we don't want to concede from them."

Thompson hails Weir-Daley display
Notts County manager Steve Thompson hopes Spencer Weir-Daley's goal in the 1-1 draw with Rotherham will kickstart their season. He said: "It was a great performance. Spencer was a thorn in their side. On another day he would have got four or five. He was first-class. "We want to go out and play football but in this league you have to scrap first and play second. "As soon as the players all fire at the same time then we will be fine."

MacKenzie has surgery in Munich
Notts County midfielder Neil MacKenzie has flown to Germany, accompanied by club physio John Haselden, to have a hernia operation in Munich. He has been playing through the pain barrier for a while, but could be playing again within a fortnight. "It will be good to get the injury cleared up," Magpies manager Ian McParland told the club website. "To have him back for Lincoln (on 24 November) would be fantastic, but the main thing is getting it sorted."

County boss bemoans Macc approach
Notts County boss Ian McParland bemoaned Macclesfield Town's 'negative' approach as his side yet again failed to overcome the Cheshire club. The Magpies went down 1-0 at home after a 64th-minute goal from Francis Green saw Macclesfield remain unbeaten in six games at Meadow Lane. "Macclesfield came to spoil the game and waste time and I thought that if we had got a goal we would have gone on to get three or four," said McParland. "Unfortunately we couldn't find one."

Mixed news on injuries for County
Notts County midfielder Jay Smith looks likely to be sidelined until the New Year with a groin injury. Smith, 26, has not played since mid-September and after having a scan will now need to visit a specialist. County have received better news about veteran striker Jason Lee following his recovery from a broken arm. "Jason has been back in training, which is a big boost. It would be terrific to have him in the squad," County boss Ian McParland told his club's website.

McParland relieved with victory
Notts County boss Ian McParland was relieved his side held on for a 2-1 win against Shrewsbury. He said: "We got the rub of the green which I think we deserved. There's a sense of relief, but the first half when we weren't at it plays on my mind. "I still feel there are a lot of things wrong with us at the moment, but overall I must say I am delighted with the win. "We have given away too many stupid goals so to hold on was massive."

Ross extends loan with Rotherham
Sheffield United midfielder Ian Ross has extended his loan at Rotherham to cover the whole of January. Ross is set to join the League Two club permanently on a free transfer but with a sell-on fee. The 21-year-old, who progressed through the Bramall Lane academy, joined the Millers in November. Ross has played just two League Cup games for the Blades but had gained first-team experience from loan spells with Boston, Bury and Notts County.

Magpies snap up Forest midfielder
Notts County have signed teenage Nottingham Forest midfielder Felix Bastians on a month-long loan deal, reports SSB. The 19-year-old German is expected to go straight into the Magpies side for Saturday's game against Stockport. Winger Bastians has struggled to make the grade at the City Ground and has loan spells at Chesterfield, Gillingham, Halifax and Northwich. Bastians joined Forest in 2005 but has only made 18 appearances.

Mayo signs for Darlington on loan
Notts County defender Paul Mayo has joined League Two rivals Darlington on a month's loan. Mayo, 26, has made 20 appearances for the Magpies this season but has fallen out of favour at Meadow Lane. The left-back has not started a match since 1 December and has been allowed to make the temporary switch. Mayo's loan spell runs up to and including 9 February - three days before Darlington are due to play Notts at Meadow Lane
