Smith fitness delights Canaries
Norwich are confident that injured on-loan Chelsea midfielder Jimmy Smith could return to action before the end of the month. The 20-year-old has not played a competitive game since joining the Canaries in the summer after injuring ankle ligaments on the pre-season tour. Norwich boss Peter Grant told the club website: "We've talked about him coming back at the end of the month. "If it's not then it'll be the first week or first 10 days of October."

Norwich's record goalscorer dies
Norwich City's all-time record goalscorer Johnny Gavin has died at the age of 79. Gavin had two spells with the Canaries, scoring 132 goals in 338 games between 1949 and 1958. A minute's applause will be held at Carrow Road in memory of Gavin before City's next home game against Sheffield Wednesday on 29 September. The Republic of Ireland international, who was born in Limerick, also played for Tottenham Hotspur.

Norwich sign Newcastle's Pattison
Norwich City have signed midfielder Matthew Pattison on loan from manager Glenn Roeder's former club Newcastle until 1 January. The 21-year-old made 12 appearances for the Magpies last season. "When I was Newcastle academy boss, I was told Matty would be the best player to come through into the first-team and I wasn't disappointed," said Roeder. "When I became manager at Newcastle, I used him both as a substitute and starting a number of games."

Norwich legend Paddon dies at 57
Former Norwich and West Ham midfielder Graham Paddon has died suddenly at the age of 57. Paddon spent the majority of his career at Carrow Road, making 340 appearances and scoring 37 goals in two spells. During the 1973-74 season he moved to West Ham and helped them stave off relegation, and in 1975 he played in the FA Cup final win over Fulham. City players will wear black armbands for Saturday's game with Coventry, the club where he began his career.

Camara seals Norwich loan switch
Norwich boss Glenn Roeder has completed his third loan signing with the capture of Derby left back Mo Camara. The 32-year-old will be at Carrow Road until 1 January and boosts their defensive options following the long-term injury to Adam Drury. Camara has played just twice for Derby this season and joined the club last year on a free transfer from Celtic. Roeder has already signed defender Martin Taylor and midfielder Matthew Pattison on-loan since joining Norwich.

Gilks looks set for rapid return
Norwich City have boosted by the news that injured goalkeeper Matthew Gilks could return to action sooner than was first expected. He suffered ligament damage after twisting his ankle a couple of weeks ago in training and looked to be on the sidelines for at least 11 weeks. But following an exploratory operation the damage was found to be less severe than had been thought. Norwich are confident Gilks will now be back playing in early January.

Sidelined Drury staying positive
Norwich defender Adam Drury says his spirits are high despite being told that a knee injury is likely to rule him out for the rest of the season. "It's coming along well," he told the Canaries' website. "I know it's going to be a long-term thing. It's very disappointing but the physio team have worked brilliantly with me and kept me ticking along. "They haven't let me get my head down. It's part of the game and you have to get on with it."

Chadwick faces three months out
Norwich winger Luke Chadwick will be out for three months after finally scheduling an operation on his troublesome shoulder injury. Chadwick has been struggling with the injury for several months but manager Glenn Roeder has waited until the January transfer window to book him in. "Now I think it's right for him to have the operation which will take place on 7 or 8 January," said Roeder. "Unfortunately this means we will be without his services for three months."

Canaries sign Pattison & Bertrand
Norwich have signed Newcastle midfielder Matthew Pattison permanently for an undisclosed fee and brought in Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand on loan. Pattison, 21, has signed for three and a half years after a successful loan. Bertrand, 18, was recently on loan at League One Oldham and will stay with Norwich until the end of the season. Boss Glenn Roeder told his club's website: "We have been following Ryan and been very impressed. We believe he can step up to the Championship."

Brown joins Preston from Norwich
Preston North End have signed striker Chris Brown from Norwich City for around £400,000. The Durham-born former Sunderland forward, who recently turned 23, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Championship's bottom club. Brown made 15 appearances last year after his early Norwich career was hampered by a hamstring injury. He is Preston's second signing of the transfer window following the arrival of Richard Chaplow from West Brom.

Evans joins Norwich as duo leave
Norwich City have re-signed Manchester City striker Ched Evans on loan. The Wales Under-21 star, 19, made nine appearances on loan at Carrow Road earlier this season, and will now remain with them until 26 February. But midfielder Julien Brellier, 26, and striker David Strihavka, 27, have left the club with immediate effect after their contracts were terminated. And Bulgarian trialist Valentin Iliev is now unlikely to join Norwich because of work permit issues.

Murray exits Norwich to join Hibs
Ian Murray has returned to Hibernian on a short-term deal until the end of the season after terminating his contract at Norwich City. The 26-year-old left Easter Road in the summer of 2005 to join Rangers under freedom of contract. The versatile player moved to Norwich on a one-year deal in August but has made just 11 appearances this season. A statement on the Hibs website says that they hope to complete Murray's registration on Friday. Murray could then go straight into the squad for Saturday's Edinburgh derby at Tynecastle. Falkirk and Brighton had expressed an interest in Murray, who can play in midfield or defence. But Murray, capped six times for Scotland, has chosen to go back to his home city. He began his Hibs career in 1999, making his debut in January 2000, and going on to become club captain before his exit to Ibrox. Murray was diagnosed with reactive arthritis after returning from Rangers' 2006 summer trip to South Africa and missed a large chunk of that season.

Norwich's Huckerby receives boost
Darren Huckerby has been given the green light to resume training and could return to action next week. The Norwich forward recently suffered a recurrence of a hip problem and there were fears over his long-term fitness. But Huckerby had an anti-inflammatory injection during a visit to a specialist and it is hoped that he will now not need to undergo surgery. "Early indications are that the injection will work," Norwich physio Neal Reynolds told the club's website. "It won't be perfect. It won't be absolutely 100%. But we want to make sure it is more comfortable. "Surgery is the last resort. I don't think anybody would advise having surgery unless he desperately needed it. "The surgery would be big surgery and it's not something we would take lightly."

Roeder not hopeful on Taylor deal
Norwich boss Glenn Roeder has described their chances of bringing Birmingham defender Martin Taylor back to Carrow Road as "very, very doubtful". Taylor, 28, had an eight-game loan spell at Norwich during the autumn. But Roeder said: "I wouldn't hold your breath about Martin coming this week (before Thursday's transfer deadline). "All I know is that he wants to come here, but I don't think it's going to happen in this transfer window. It might be something for the summer now." However, the Canaries boss insisted he was optimistic of signing "a few new faces" before the transfer window closes.

Roeder not looking for more loans
Norwich manager Glenn Roeder has ruled out making a loan signing despite being short of strikers. Jamie Cureton is recovering after having appendix removed, leaving Ched Evans, Dion Dublin and Chris Marton as Roeder's only recognised forwards. But Roeder told Norwich's website: "We have seven loan players here and you can only use five in any one game. "With seven it means that every game there's a couple that are not involved and it'll be disappointing for them."
