Quality field seek Cobblers job
Northampton general manager Tony Clarke claims he has been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the applicants for the managerial vacancy at Sixfields. "In football, Northampton is a name people look at as a club that is going places," he told Sir Stanley. "Most people recognise we are going in one direction, so that means that both the number and the calibre of the applicants has been quite surprising." Former boss Colin Calderwood joined Nottingham Forest earlier this week.

Smith leaves Cobblers for Quakers
Darlington are close to making their third signing of the summer with the capture of winger Martin Smith from Northampton Town. The move is subject to a medical, but it is expected the 31-year-old will sign a two-year deal with the Quakers. Darlington boss David Hodgson told the club's website: \"The capture of Martin Smith is a massive plus for us. \"Martin was outstanding against us last season and, at his best, can be a 15 to 20 goals-a-season player.\"

Northampton tie up Quinn transfer
Northern Ireland international striker James Quinn has completed his free transfer move to Northampton Town. The 31-year-old, who has won 41 caps, was made available by Peterborough after one season at London Road and has penned a two-year deal at Sixfields. \"I coached him for a short time at West Brom and I have always rated him very highly,\" Cobblers manager John Gorman told his club's website. \"He learned a lot in Holland and I've always thought he can cause problems.\" Quinn has scored 59 league goals in 324 appearances for Birmingham, Blackpool Stockport, West Brom, Notts County, Bristol Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday, Peterborough and Bristol City. He also had a three-year spell with Dutch side Willem II. Brentford had expressed an interest in the forward and Bristol City were also thought to be in the running after Quinn's loan spell there last season. Cheltenham ruled out a move despite being interested in him in 2005.

Crewe 2-2 Northampton
Crewe winger Ryan Lowe missed a great late chance to win the game for his side as they were held by Northampton. Lowe gave the hosts an early lead when he slammed in a brilliant 18-yard volley, only for Scott McGleish to level by converting Pedj Bojic's cross. Midway through the first half Lowe crossed for David Vaughan to head in but Alex were pegged back again when Bojic passed for Andy Kirk to score. Lowe then shot straight at Lee Harper as Crewe had to settle for a draw. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Crewe: Williams, Otsemobor, Kempson, Jones, Baudet, Grant (O'Connor 86), Lowe, Gary Roberts, Vaughan, Rodgers (Maynard 79), Higdon. Gorman frustrated after home loss
Northampton manager John Gorman felt his side deserved to get at least a point after their 1-0 home defeat against Brentford. Gorman told Sir Stanley: \"We were very unfortunate to lose. The lads did enough to merit getting a point. \"It is very frustrating because it was a bad goal to give away and it was a goal out of nothing but they took it. \"They had one or two chances however they made the most of the opportunity that came their way.\"

Northampton 0-1 Nottm Forest
Colin Calderwood enjoyed a happy return to Northampton as Forest maintained their 100% start to the season courtesy of Chris Doig's own goal. Jack Lester spurned an early chance to give Forest the lead after Doig upended Grant Holt inside the box, but he blazed the penlaty over the bar. Doig then deflected Holt's shot past Paul Smith before Scott McGleish was sent off for Northampton. Sammy Clingan almost doubled the lead late on but his shot hit the post. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Northampton: Bunn, Crowe, Chambers, Doig, Holt, Bojic (Quinn 65), Burnell (Jess 70), Taylor (Bradley Johnson 80), Aiston, McGleish, Kirk. Cobblers wait on McGleish appeal
Northampton have appealed against the red card shown to striker Scott McGleish in Saturday's 1-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest at Sixfields. McGleish saw red after 62 minutes for violent conduct, but the Cobblers have lodged a claim for wrongful dismissal. The club have also submitted video evidence to the Football Association's disciplinary commission, which was due to consider the claim on Tuesday. If successful, he will be available for Saturday's trip to Gillingham.

Gillingham v Northampton
Gillingham loan goalkeeper Darren Randolph could be handed his debut with Kelvin Jack struggling with a knock picked up against Bradford last week. Striker Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu may be in line for his first start after featuring as a substitute in all three league games so far. Northampton striker James Quinn is in line to make his first start with Scott McGleish suspended. Mark Bunn will keep his place in goal after an impressive debut last week.

Gillingham 0-1 Northampton
A goal from Northampton's Andy Kirk was enough to give his side victory at the expense of Gillingham. Gills player Darren Randolph gifted the Cobblers a goal midway through the first half. The goalkeeper failed to deal with Chris Doig's high cross and Kirk pounced to prod home after picking James Quinn's rebounded effort. Andrew Crofts came close for the home side but his header was brilliantly saved by Mark Bunn. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gillingham: Randolph, Jupp, Sancho, Cox, Jackman, Bentley, Flynn, Crofts (Spiller 82), Jarvis, Mulligan (Ndumbu-Nsungu 71), McDonald. Dyche is praised by Cobblers boss
Northampton boss John Gorman was delighted with defender Sean Dyche as they won 1-0 at Gillingham to secure their first victory back in League One. \"Sean was magnificent - he came back into the side and he helped us control the play in the first half,\" he said. \"I made a mistake not playing Sean from the start of the season. When you make a mistake, you have to put it right. \"But Sean has shown a great attitude, he has worked his way back in and did a great job for us.\"

QPR v Northampton
Northampton's Joe Burnell (calf) and Chris Doig (deal leg) face late fitness checks their Carling Cup first-round trip to QPR. Striker Scott McGleish sits out the second match of his three-game ban, while David Hunt (groin) and Fred Murray (Achilles) remain sidelined.

QPR 3-2 Northampton
Teenage substitute Ray Jones scored his first career goal as QPR edged past Northampton in the Carling Cup. Northampton 1-3 Bristol City
An angry confrontation between Bristol City team-mates Bradley Orr and Louis Carey marred their side's battling victory at Northampton. Andy Kirk slotted in for the home side after impressive keeper Adriano Basso parried a deflected Jason Crowe shot. A Phil Jevons penalty levelled for the visitors before Orr was sent-off after appearing to aim a headbutt at Carey. But Steve Brooker's deflected shot and a late David Cotterill penalty won the game for 10-man City. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Northampton: Bunn, Chambers (Jess 46), Dyche, Doig, Crowe, Burnell, Taylor (Bojic 69), Holt, Aiston, Kirk, Quinn (Gilligan 63). Bunn enjoys Cobblers penalty save
Northampton goalkeeper Mark Bunn was delighted to help his side to a 2-1 win at Rotherham on Friday with a crucial penalty save. \"I've faced quite a few penalties this season so it was about time I saved one,\" he joked on the club website. \"I did not think it was a penalty but in the end I had to make the save and I was just pleased it helped us on to win the game. \"I think we have had a lot of bad luck with penalty decisions this season.\"
