McClaren to pick qualifiers squad
New England manager Steve McClaren will select his squad for September's opening Euro 2008 qualifiers on Friday. McClaren began his new role with an impressive 4-0 win against Greece in a friendly but now faces his first competitive games in charge. England kick-off their qualifying campaign with a match against Andorra at Old Trafford on 2 September then travel to Macedonia on 6 September. Their other Group E opponents are Croatia, Russia, Israel and Estonia. McClaren sprang a surprise ahead of the Old Trafford friendly by dropping former captain David Beckham from his squad. He also brought back striker Jermain Defoe, who had been left out of the World Cup party, and handed a senior debut to goalkeeper Chris Kirkland. Chelsea defender John Terry took the captain's armband. McClaren is likely to stick with the bulk of squad for the qualifiers although he will seek a suitable replacement for striker Dean Ashton, who broke his ankle during training the day before the Greece match. Arsenal left-back Ashley Cole is certain to retain his place despite being left out of Arsenal's squad because of the ongoing dispute over his future. Gunners team-mate Theo Walcott could return to the senior squad after two solid substitute appearances in the Premiership.
