Ferguson issues advice to Keane Sir Alex Ferguson has urged Roy Keane to be more tolerant - if he is to succeed as manager of Sunderland.
Keane's first game in charge is against Derby on Saturday.
Manchester United boss Ferguson told the Mirror: \"If you can't deal with the pressure and can't enjoy the job, then you are going to be in trouble.
\"Some players think they know what it's like to be a manager but they don't, they can't do it. You have got to be prepared to learn.\"
Ferguson added: \"The most important thing he has to do is find a way of enjoying the job.\"
Former Republic of Ireland and Celtic midfielder Keane played for 13 years under Ferguson at Old Trafford and was his manager's on-field general.
But that partnership ended when Keane left United in November 2005 - after criticising his team-mates during that season.
However, now the Irishman has joined the managerial fraternity, both men have been exchanging phone calls.
\"I've spoken to him several times and I said the same thing to him that I said to my other former players like Steve Bruce,\" added Ferguson.
\"I said you've got to deal with and navigate the problems of today like player power and the media.
\"I wished him well and told him he will have to learn to tolerate things in football that he just doesn't agree with.
\"And the most important thing he has to do is to find a way of enjoying the job.\"
The pair are at opposite ends of the managerial spectrum and, while Keane is in his first fortnight in the job, Ferguson is in his 32nd year.
But the Scot, who has been at Old Trafford for almost 20 years and is fast approaching 65 years of age, has no intention of quitting just yet.
\"The important thing about working is whether you enjoy it and whether your health is OK,\" he added.
\"Once you get to your sixties you are never guaranteed your health.
\"For instance, two years ago I got a pacemaker. That's an indication that you are getting older so you have to prioritise yourself the right way.
\"I eat the right things and get a proper rest. I work hard but I go to the gymnasium as much as I can.
\"For me, it's two things. Am I enjoying the job? Yes. Is my health OK? I think it's OK as I'm getting the right check-ups and if it wasn't that way I'd change my thinking.
\"I quite like people talking about this being my last year and wondering if I'm going to go because it means they don't know when I'm going to retire.
\"I don't give them any information about that and let them carry on and when they ask I take pleasure in them not knowing.\"

Ruud accuses Ferguson of betrayal Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy said he felt betrayed by Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to drop him for the Carling Cup final.
The 30-year-old left Old Trafford for Real Madrid in July after scoring 150 goals in five seasons.
Van Nistelrooy said he had enjoyed a good relationship with Ferguson until he was dropped for February's 4-0 win over Wigan at the Millennium Stadium.
\"To me this felt like a stab in the back,\" said Van Nistelrooy.
Louis Saha played instead of Van Nistelrooy in the Carling Cup final, with the Dutchman remaining on the bench for the full 90 minutes.
Ferguson said in August that Van Nistelrooy's reaction to being dropped was one of the main reasons for his departure to Spain - and the Dutchman backed this view.
\"The first three-quarters of last season went well for me, but the final part is best forgotten,\" he said.
\"My situation with Sir Alex started to change and it became difficult for me and him to work together.\"
Van Nistelrooy said he had settled in well since moving to Spain.
\"I feel like I have been here for 20 years and moving here is the best thing that has happened in my life,\" he said.
\"Being at Madrid is fantastic. The people are wonderful and that is a massive thing for me. I've had a great first impression of Real Madrid.
\"The club has a fantastic set-up with marvellous people. The atmosphere at training is perfect - it's just wonderful.\"

Smith hoping for Man Utd return Manchester United's Alan Smith says he is ready to return as a substitute against Spurs on Saturday after nearly seven months out with a broken leg.
The 25-year-old broke his leg on 18 February, but has now come through three appearances for the reserves.
Smith was originally expected to be out of action for the whole of 2006.
\"If the gaffer were to ask me if I'd be ready for the bench against Spurs, I'd say 'yes' without hesitation,\" Smith told the Manchester Evening News.
Smith said he hoped to be involved in the near future even if United boss Sir Alex Ferguson decided against including him on the bench at the weekend.
\"Ninety minutes of Premiership football would be very difficult at the moment but to come on as a substitute would be no problem,\" added Smith.
\"If you are playing at Old Trafford, you get that adrenaline rush and that would see you through.
\"If it is not this weekend then we have the Champions League starting next week against Celtic and, with seven allowed on the bench, then there might be a chance.\"
Smith is desperate to make up for his lengthy spell on the sidelines, with his face becoming a familiar sight in the Old Trafford stands.
\"I am fed up of watching,\" he told MUTV.
\"I am just itching to get involved again. I have had to put the reins on myself a little bit but overall I can't wait.\"

Rooney and Gray row in restaurant Manchester United's Wayne Rooney was involved in an incident at a restaurant with Blackburn defender Michael Gray on Saturday, according to his spokesman.
England striker Rooney, 20, was out with fiancee Coleen McLoughlin in Manchester when Gray, 32, is reported to have approached the group.
A spokesman for Rooney claimed that Gray made offensive remarks to female guests of the England international.
\"Wayne asked him to go several times. It was a brief incident,\" he said.
Rooney is suspended from club duty and has only just completed an international ban for his dismissal during England's World Cup quarter-final defeat to Portugal.
He was out at the Panacea Bar and Restaurant in Manchester with his fiancee and some friends.
The spokesman added: \"Wayne and Coleen were enjoying a night out with three other couples when Michael came up to their table uninvited.\"
But he added the incident was now forgotten: \"As far as Wayne is concerned, he bears no ill-feeling towards Michael.\"
A Blackburn spokesman told Sir Stanley: \"Michael took steps to make manager Mark Hughes aware of it.
\"Michael had the opportunity to make a comment but he doesn't want to get involved in it.\"
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that no incident was reported.

Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham Ryan Giggs' eighth-minute header proved enough for Manchester United as the hosts extended their 100% start to four games against a profligate Spurs side.
The Welshman swooped to head in off the bar after Paul Robinson tamely parried Cristiano Ronaldo's swerving free-kick.
Ronaldo was at his magical best at times and was twice denied by Robinson.
Michael Dawson, Ledley King, Jermain Defoe and Mido all wasted superb chances to seal what would have been a deserved draw.
United had Edwin van der Sar to thank for preventing Dawson and King scoring, tipping the former's attempted lob away in the second half before blocking King's follow-up on the floor.
But Defoe had no-one to blame but himself for missing a golden opportunity 20 minutes from time when he contrived to head over the bar from six yards with the goal gaping from Benoit Assou-Ekotto's cross.
And Egyptian Mido, on his return for Tottenham after securing a permanent move from Roma, was equally wasteful when he failed to connect with Reto Ziegler's swirling cross.
A leveller would have been just rewards for the visitors, who reacted well to going behind early.
With Aaron Lennon absent with a knee injury, Spurs' narrow midfield - which included a deep-lying Mido - coped well despite United's abundance of attacking flair and confidence.
Michael Carrick in particular was in impressive form against his former club, dominating the midfield in the early stages and spraying cross-field passes around much as he did for the Londoners last season.
And it was one such Carrick pass that led to United's first chance when Ronaldo drifted in from the right and tested Robinson with a curling left-footed effort.
United always looked dangerous, with Ronaldo at the heart of all their good attacks, tormenting the visiting defence throughout the afternoon, not least when he forced a superb reaction save from Robinson from an angle on the hour mark.
And he set Louis Saha free to almost have the final say of the afternoon when he raced clear of the Spurs defence, held off Assou-Ekotto and blazed at goal only for Robinson to palm away well.
It was representative of an open contest, played out in front of a record Premiership crowd of 75,434.
However, Spurs manager Martin Jol will find it hard to reason how Spurs did not find a goal, with Jermaine Jenas also blazing wide when well-set in the first half.
The Dutchman will have been encouraged, though, by his side's resilience and the performance of new boy Pascal Chimbonda, who hardly put a foot wrong at right back.
But Spurs' missed chances meant United were able to hold on for the win - the first time they have won their first four games of the season in the Premiership - and return to the top of the table.
Tottenham, meanwhile, have now stumbled to their worst start to a season since 1995 with work to be done ahead of their Uefa Cup clash against Slavia Prague on Thursday.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson:
\"We beat a good side who will make an impact in this league.
\"I think Ryan has shown his experience and maturity. His ability's always been there. He's been a fantastic player for this club.
\"He'll go down as one of the greatest. But he's using his experience. I'm pleased as we need players to do that.\"
Tottenham boss Martin Jol:
\"I think in the first half we probably lacked a bit of confidence.
\"It was a new team again, we had Hossam Ghaly making his debut and Pascal Chimbonda was new. But I think he did terrifically well.
\"First half they didn't cause us a lot of problems. But at Old Trafford you get two or three chances at the most. And we had probably five today.\"

Bardsley considering cap options Rangers defender Phil Bardsley admits he is still considering whether he should pledge his international future to Scotland or England.
The youngster, who is on-loan at Ibrox from Manchester United, is entitled to play for Scotland because his father was born in Glasgow.
\"It's been mentioned before and it's something I need to think about over the next few months,\" he said.
\"But my main priority right now is focusing on my club football.\"
Bardsley misses Manchster united's forthcoming Champions League clash with Celtic but insists he would much rather be at Rangers.
\"I'm here to play for Rangers now,\" he said. \"I spoke to Alan Smith yesterday and he's raring to go for the game against Celtic.
\"I think United are confident and there's no reason why not.
\"They got off to a great start and will be hoping to get a result against Celtic.\"

Gravesen upbeat for Man Utd game Thomas Gravesen believes that Celtic can look ahead to their Champions League encounter at Manchester United on Wednesday in confident mood.
The Dane, who made a winning debut at Aberdeen on Saturday, told the Scottish Daily Express: \"The victory can give us enough belief to deliver a good result.
\"I'm really looking forward to the game. They are the kind of games you love to play as a footballer.
\"The manager has said he wants me to get into the position to score goals.\"
The Glasgow side - who won 1-0 at Pittodrie - face a stern test in their opening Group F fixture against in-form United, who defeated Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.
But the midfielder, signed from Real Madrid for £2m, is ready for the showdown.
\"We can now go to England with confidence and we will do our best down there,\" he said.
\"The Aberdeen game was very important, as the performance showed to me what a strong team we are and how committed we are to winning.\"
Alex Ferguson's team are strong favourites to emerge with maximum points, but the midfielder is adamant Celtic can prove the doubters wrong.
\"You will see what we can do when we get on the park,\" he added.
\"What people think about the Scottish league we will prove them wrong for sure.\"

Ferguson reveals failed Senna bid Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he failed in an 11th-hour bid to resurrect a move for Villareal midfielder Marcos Senna on transfer deadline day.
Ferguson put interest in the 30-year-old on hold while he chased England midfielder Owen Hargreaves.
That decision backfired as Bayern Munich refused to sell and Villarreal rejected an improved offer for Senna.
Ferguson told United Review: \"We made another late bid for Marcos Senna, but you cannot force clubs to sell.\"
Despite his failure to land either midfielder, and with £18.5m Michael Carrick the only summer addition, Ferguson insists his squad is in healthy shape for an assault on domestic and European honours.
Ferguson added: \"We did work very hard on trying to bring Owen Hargreaves to Old Trafford, right up to the day the transfer window closed.
\"Similarly, we made another late bid for Marcos Senna,\" said Ferguson who has seen his side open their Premiership campaign with four straight wins and his upbeat about his side's prospects despite failing to land either player.
\"Some of you may not share my confidence, especially if you were expecting more from the transfer market this summer. But I am not dissatisfied with my squad.
\"You always seek to add to your options but we have a good squad well equipped to make a serious challenge on all fronts.
\"You can see that from our recent league performances and I believe it will take something strange to stop us qualifying from our Champions League group this time.\"

Man Utd suffer Park injury blow Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-sung has been ruled out for three months with an ankle injury.
The South Korean international picked up the injury in Saturday's 1-0 win over Spurs after coming on as a substitute for Kieran Richardson.
A scan confirmed Park had suffered ankle ligament damage.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: \"He injured his ankle in the last minute of the game against Spurs. It's a bad luck for him and bad luck for us.\"
A three month absence would see Park miss all of United's Champions League group games as well as a dozen Premiership games.

Giggs injury mars Man Utd victory Manchester United's Ryan Giggs could be out for three weeks after limping off with a hamstring injury during Wednesday's 3-2 win against Celtic.
The Wales winger picked up the knock after he was fouled by keeper Artur Boruc, that consequently resulted in a penalty which Louis Saha converted.
\"It's very unfortunate for us and Ryan,\" United boss Sir Alex Ferguson told the club website.
Park Ji-sung will have ankle surgery and will be out for three months.
Meanwhile, Ferguson lavished praise on fit-again Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his Champions League winner against Celtic.
Ferguson said: \"If he's on the park for 45 minutes he will get you a goal. It was a pure goalscorer's goal.
\"He did what he was best at - using his brain in the penalty area. He knows where the ball's going to land before anyone else. It's a fantastic quality.\"
Ferguson praised Celtic's positive approach, but admitted his side could have won by a bigger margin.
He said: \"We could have scored a lot of goals, but great credit to Celtic. Many teams come here and shore things up at the back and hope to steal something near the end.
\"They came and had a go, which is typical of their club and which will please them, but some of our attacking play was very good.
\"I've told the players that when you are in Europe you have to show your quality - we did that and I'm very pleased about that.\"
Celtic took the lead when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink overpowered Rio Ferdinand and Ferguson said: \"If the concentration is not good it can cause you problems and their first goal was a lapse of concentration.\"
Wayne Rooney was substituted late on, and Ferguson added: \"It was his first game back and he needs games.
\"He has only played against Porto in pre-season and against Portsmouth, so it is only his third game and it showed. His touch and his timing was not always Wayne Rooney.\"

Ferguson demands backing for team Sir Alex Ferguson has accused sections of Manchester United's support of \"sleeping\" during weekend games.
Ferguson admitted some Premiership matches were subdued compared to the Champions League clash with Celtic.
He said: \"I keep saying I wished every team could bring 6,000 fans with them like Celtic because it does create a competitive element between the fans.\"
Ferguson added: \"On Saturdays they come here and half of them are sleeping, waiting to be entertained.\"
The Scot's comments are an echo of former captain Roy Keane's critical comments about \"the prawn sandwich brigade\" six years ago, who he claimed attended United matches.
Ferguson said after Celtic fans flooded Old Trafford: \"It created a far better atmospehere and our fans are better because of it.\"
He added: \"I think back to some of the great Wednesday nights - electric. We need that more often.
\"We have to get that atmosphere right throughout the seasons. Some weekends they come here to be entranced, to see magic.
\"But we need their spirit to ignite the team at times. It should not always been the other way around. A fan can stir his team.\"

Man Utd v Arsenal Cristiano Ronaldo is back after missing the Champions League match through suspension, but Ryan Giggs is out.
Park Ji-Sung's ankle injury means he is also a non-starter but Nemanja Vidic and Alan Smith are back in the frame.
It looks certain Arsenal will be without captain Thierry Henry, who has with a foot injury, and Robin van Persie, who is nursing a hip problem.
But defender Kolo Toure is expected to start and midfielder Freddie Ljungberg is pressing for a recall.

\"What you want is to make sure the games are being played fairly.\"
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger speaking to Arsenal TV Online:
\"Don't forget as well that we have a game in hand.
\"We do not go there to lose, we go there to win, and I am confident we have a good chance to do it.
\"Let's focus on us and play at our best level and continue to do what we do and try to improve our defensive record.\"

Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal Emmanuel Adebayor scored five minutes from the end to give Arsenal a first Premiership victory of the season and halt Manchester United's winning run.
Cesc Fabregas caught United's Cristiano Ronaldo in possession and Adebayor scored from his threaded pass.
United debutant keeper Tomasz Kuszczak had earlier saved Gilberto's penalty after he had brought down Adebayor.
Arsenal needed keeper Jens Lehmann to preserve the win, with an astonishing late save from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The German dived full length to his right to turn Solskjaer's left-footed snap shot around the post.
With Thierry Henry unfit, Arsenal strung five across midfield, with Adebayor asked to plough a lone furrow up front at Old Trafford.
But Arsenal's midfield quintet were completely bypassed by Mikael Silvestre's diagonal ball in the first minute, which found Darren Fletcher breaking into the box, but William Gallas blocked the shot with a well-timed challenge.
Edwin van der Sar's failure to shake off a stomach bug handed Kuszczak a debut and his initial action in a first-team shirt was to haul down Adebayor for a penalty.
Gilberto's standing foot slipped as he struck the kick, allowing Kuszczak to atone for his error by plunging to his right to save.
The Polish keeper's stock rose even further when he parried Adebayor's powerful header against the post and Paul Scholes was on the line to clear the ball away from Gallas.
With Freddie Ljungberg, Aleksandr Hleb and Rosicky pushing on from midfield, Arsenal worked the ball slickly to make light of Henry's absence - and Kuszczak was called into action to beat away Tomas Rosicky's powerful shot.
Both goalkeepers were hogging the action and Lehmann's sloppy throw led to the ball ending up at Ronaldo's feet and the German had to redeem himself with a sharp save.
United's major players were struggling to make a first-half impact, although Ronaldo made one on Lehmann, whose half began with him seeing a yellow card and ended with him seeing stars as he blocked the Portugal winger's shot with his face, knowing little about the save.
Arsenal's management of the ball was sublime at times and their five-man midfield made it difficult for United to pick their way through, forcing them to play long balls.
The direct route almost paid off when Louis Saha flicked the ball on to Fletcher and hared into the box to meet the cross and glance a header inches wide.
Adebayor was given a chance to run on goal by Ronaldo's sloppy pass but the Togo striker's finish was unconvincing, providing Kuszczak with an easier save than he might have expected.
John O'Shea then gifted the ball to Julio Baptista and watched with his heart in his mouth as the Brazilian substitute drove on to thump a shot inches wide.
There was no hint of either side settling for a draw and in a gripping finale Arsenal took the lead.
Fabregas caught Ronaldo in possession 45 yards out and - following a twisting run - threaded a perfect pass for Adebayor to slide the ball past Kuszczak.

Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand feared he would be sold by Sir Alex Ferguson after being pictured with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon.
The England international defender was pictured with Kenyon at a restaurant last year, sparking talk he could be on the verge of a move to The Blues.
Ferdinand immediately saw the negative aspect of being snapped with Kenyon and wanted to see Sir Alex as soon as possible, but it was too late.
The Scottish tactician demanded to see the former Leeds stopper to thrash out what was happening and Fergie did not hold back with his inquisition.
The United boss was so unhappy with the defender's actions that Ferdinand feared his career with The Red Devils could even be at an end.
\"I feared the worst when the picture was in the papers and decided that I would go and see the manager when I arrived for training and explain,\" he said in his book, which is being serialised in The Sun.
\"I didn't need to. He called me in first thing and went absolutely bananas. He said 'what the hell's going on?'
\"He hammered me and quite rightly. I got the treatment. I'd never seen him so angry; it was far worse than when I missed the drugs test. Much worse.
\"I couldn't say a lot because I was in the wrong. I just said again 'boss, I don't want to sign for nobody. I want to sign for Man United. I told you at the beginning I want to sign for United'.
\"For a moment I was worried he was going to say, I'm going to sell you.
\"The meeting went on for 15 minutes and he was going: 'You know how people will interpret it. It doesn't matter what you said.
\"It doesn't matter if you were talking about the price of milk, the time of day or the colour of the table you were sitting at. It's just so stupid of you to go there and meet Kenyon'.\"

Reading 1-1 Man Utd Cristiano Ronaldo salvaged a point for Manchester United and denied Reading an historic win at the Madejski Stadium.
Ronaldo cut inside from the left to unleash a shot across Marcus Hahnemann to spare United's blushes.
Kevin Doyle earlier fired Reading ahead from the penalty spot after referee Peter Walton ruled Gary Neville handled Seol Ki-Hyeon's cross.
United had chances to steal the points, with Kieran Richardson missing his kick in front of goal.
Gabriel Heinze lined up for the first time in over a year in a Manchester United team that showed five changes from that beaten by Arsenal.
They almost snatched an early lead as Wayne Rooney's shot on the turn proved too hot for Hahnemann to hold and Graeme Murty just got to the loose ball ahead of the prowling Richardson.
By his own admission, Rooney is yet to find his touch this season and that was evident as Ronaldo's cute pass found him in space inside the box but the England striker's underhit shot proved little trouble for Hahneman.
Hahnemann continued to give the impression he wore non-stick gloves as he spilled Ronaldo's free-kick and Ivar Ingimarsson's clearance bailed him out.
In contrast, Van der Sar's handling was clean as a whistle as he went down to clutch Ki-Hyeon's powerful low drive with Leroy Lita lurking in vain for scraps.
United, though, always carried more menace and when Ronaldo got to the dead-ball line he fired across the face of goal with Paul Scholes just failing to make contact.
Reading, defending a 100% home record, worked like Trojans to deny United space on the flanks and the lack of width forced the visitors to try and pick their way through the middle where Reading always ensured there was congestion.
Reading went ahead soon after the restart in controversial circumstances. Referee Walton ruled Neville controlled Ki-Hyeon's cross with his upper arm, a decision replays suggested might have been harsh to say the least.
Van der Sar guessed right and got a hand to Doyle's penalty but was unable to keep it out as the Irish striker claimed his fourth goal of the season.
Reading were not content to sit on their lead and the mobility of Lita and Doyle along United's back line kept them stretched.
Richardson completely missed his kick in front of goal from Rooney's cross, and he was instantly replaced by Saha as Sir Alex Ferguson looked to give Rooney more support.
United needed something inspirational to crack Reading's resistance and they got it from Ronaldo who collected the ball wide on the left, weaved his way inside Murty and fired an angled shot across Hahnemann.
The goal changed the face of the game, and United poured forward in search of a winner, but Reading continued to defend heroically, and held out for a deserved point.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading boss Steve Coppell:
\"I thought it was going to go our way, but there was a piece of individual skill and a great finish from Ronaldo.
\"So we're half-pleased with the point given how the game went, thinking what might have been.
\"I have to give my players a round of applause for their efforts.\"
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson:
\"Reading, they fought for every ball and worked their tails off. But we should have done better.
\"They put eight bodies in front of us in their box and that is not easy to play against.
\"We had shots blocked, over the bar and the keeper made two or three good saves. Sometimes it happens that way.\"
