Manchester United 1 QPR 0
QPR's defiance at Old Trafford was finally broken as Carlos Tevez fired Manchester United into the Carling Cup last eight. Radek Cerny made one excellent low save to deny Tevez, while Anderson also went close as United chased victory against the Championship side. In a largely a chance-free opening period, too many United passes going astray and the visitors contributed little in an attacking sense. And QPR continued to frustrate the Premier League giants until, with the game entering its last 15 minutes, Peter Ramage fouled Nani in the box and Tevez stepped up with a convincing spot-kick for the only goal of the game. Rodrigo Possebon made his comeback for United. Possebon has not appeared since he was stretchered off against Middlesbrough in the previous round but took his place in an unfamiliar starting line-up which featured skipper Gary Neville in central defence. Backed by a sizeable away support, Rangers were making their first visit to Old Trafford for 13 years and looking to emulate a famous 4-1 triumph in 1992, when Dennis Bailey scored a memorable hat-trick.
