Lyon clinch French title triumph
Lyon are French champions for a record fifth year in a row after rivals Bordeaux were beaten 3-2 at Lille. Gerard Houllier's side, with 75 points from 33 matches, cannot be caught by Bordeaux, who have 61 points after 34 games and just four matches left. The reigning champions ensured they would retain their title with five games remaining of the season. Former Liverpool boss Houllier follows Jacques Santini and Paul Le Guen (three) in steering Lyon to glory. St Etienne and Marseille held the previous record of four consecutive league titles. St Etienne were crowned from 1967 to 1970 while Marseille were champions from 1989 to 1992. In 1993, Marseille ended the season top of Ligue 1 for the fifth consecutive year but were stripped of that title for match-fixing. Lyon can celebrate their success when they travel to Paris St Germain on Sunday with the title already secured.
