Lizarazu unveils retirement plan
Bayern Munich defender Bixente Lizarazu will retire at the end of the season to take up a career in television.
The 36-year-old won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship with France and also helped Bayern win the Champions League in 2001.
He retired from international football in 2004 and has since refused pleas from France coach Raymond Domenech to add to his 97 caps.
"My last match will be for Bayern Munich on May 13," he said.
Lizarazu is on course for his sixth German Bundesliga title this season and has also won the German Cup five times.
His decision comes within a week of Real Madrid playmaker Zinedine Zidane, 33, announcing that he will retire when France's campaign ends at this summer's World Cup finals in Germany.
Lizarazu is close to Zidane, having played with him at Bordeaux for years before both embarked on glittering careers for prestigious clubs.
