Keeper Foster to get England call
Fabio Capello says Manchester United's third-choice goalkeeper Ben Foster will be in the England squad for the games with Slovakia and Ukraine. Capello does not pick players who are not club regulars, but Foster's Carling Cup final display earned him a spot in the squad to be announced on Sunday. "I watched him on TV and then him at Wembley - I'll check him in training and decide," said the England coach. Everton's Leighton Baines and Bolton's Kevin Davies are in line for a call-up. Left-back Baines has produced a number of good performances and scored his first goal for Everton against Portsmouth on Saturday. Davies, 32, is the leading English goalscorer in the Premier League with 11 goals. Foster, 25, earned one cap under Capello's predecesor Steve McClaren, in a friendly against Spain, and since then he has been plagued by injuries. England play Slovakia in a friendly at Wembley next Saturday, followed by a World Cup qualifier on 1 April against Ukraine, and Capello has pledged to make his maximum number of six substitutions against Slovakia in order to ensure the team is fresh for the second game. Foster, who is third choice at Old Trafford behind Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak, will replace Manchester City's Joe Hart in the squad, a second blow for Hart after losing his place in the City side to Shay Given. "It is different for goalkeepers," said Capello about his decision to go against his usual selection policy. "I want to get to know him and this is the first time he has been fit." Barring injury, David Beckham will also be included in the squad, and Capello said he was glad the former England captain was testing himself at the highest level on loan at AC Milan, rather than just playing for LA Galaxy in America's Major League Soccer. "The standard is different and it's important for him at this moment to play in Europe. Not only in Milan but in Europe because it's different," said the former Milan manager, who also managed Beckham at Real Madrid. "MLS is not the same level as the Europeans - Italy, Spain, Germany or England for sure."
