Ipswich dent poor QPR hopes
Ipswich came from behind to win 3-1 at Queens Park Rangers and hand their Championship play-off hopes a big boost. The hosts started the match well and Samuel Di Carmine gave them a third-minute lead with a well-taken finish after good work on the right by Wayne Routledge. Eleven minutes later Jonathan Stead equalised from close range after Pablo Counago deflected the ball into his path. Ipswich were in the ascendance and controlled the rest of the first half without adding to their lead. The second half saw QPR come back into the match, but Spanish forward Counago put his side ahead with a superb solo goal after Gavin Mahon gave the ball away just inside his own half. After the error and perhaps with an earlier unpunished mistake in mind, a section of the home support booed Hoops captain Mahon, despite the former Watford midfielder having led his side to a nine-match unbeaten league run prior to the defeat. Jim Magilton's side extended their lead when Jonathan Walters scored the goal of the game, a sweetly-struck shot past Richard Wright after a superb crossfield pass from Alan Quinn. QPR had a late shout for a penalty correctly waved away by Stuart Atwell when Gareth McCauley slide-tackled Routledge in the box, but a comeback was unlikely at that stage with the Tractor Boys well drilled in defence. Ipswich stay 10th after the win but move three points clear of 11th-placed QPR and two points behind the play-off places, although the West London side have two games in hand.
