Hughes passed fit for N Ireland
Aaron Hughes has been passed fit to line out for Northern Ireland in Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Spain at Windsor Park. Hughes sustained a head wound in Saturday's 3-0 defeat by Iceland and required six stitches. The Aston Villa defender's wife gave birth to a baby girl on Sunday so the player was released from the Northern Ireland camp until Monday evening. Lawrie Sanchez has indicated that he will make changes for Wednesday's game. Kyle Lafferty is being tipped for a starting role in place of veteran striker James Quinn. Michael Duff could be in contention for a place in the defence with left-back Tony Capaldi likely to be under pressure to retain his starting place although the Plymouth player could be switched to his club position on the left-side of midfield, to the exclusion of Stuart Elliott. Alternatively, Sanchez may be tempted to recall Grant McCann to the left-side of midfield. Uncapped Manchester United youngster Jonny Evans was drafted into the squad over the weekend but it will be a surprise if the 18-year-old starts the game. \"We were going to change the team anyway because of Spain,\" Sanchez told BBC Sport. \"They play a different way to Iceland and there's one of two organisational things we have to sort out. \"I've got a couple of decisions to make over the next 24 hours or so.\" Sanchez said that he won't name his team until around an hour before kick-off.

Sanchez accepts blame for defeat
Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez has told Sir Stanley that he takes full responsibility for the 3-0 defeat by Iceland at Windsor Park on Saturday. \"As the man who picks the team I am responsible. I am the manager and nobody is to blame except myself. \"I decide the tactics and if we lose it is down to me. We let the fans down and we are as disappointed as anyone. Our hopes were high but were soon dashed.\" Sanchez earlier claimed that the media had helped to raise false expectations. Sanchez's side were fancied to beat Iceland in the opening Euro 2008 qualifier and now badly need a good result against Spain on Wednesday. \"Before the game, the Iceland boss held up one of the papers saying this was a game NI were going to win. \"I never said that. It was expectation built up in the media,\" said Sanchez. \"Anybody that was in my press conferences will tell you that I never said that at all. \"Myself and the players said all along that Iceland are of the same standard as ourselves. \"(Eidur) Gudjohnsen is a world quality player and slightly above what we've got and they were always capable of beating us.\" Sanchez claimed that the media \"got carried away\" in the run-up to Saturday's game. \"They (the media) go from boom to bust. We lose the game and suddenly we're a poor team. We're neither one or the other. \"It was a game for the taking for either side on Saturday and Iceland took it. \"Now we've got to regain some personal pride to repay the fans with a good performance on Wednesday night.\" Striker David Healy later said he did not believe the side's chances had been over-hyped. \"We were coming into a new campaign, we were there to perform and we wanted to perform. \"Recent results meant that we were probably going into the game as favourites which we are probably not used to,\" said the Leeds United striker.
