Hoops loan call for Man Utd's Danny Welbeck
Hoops are hoping they can persuade Manchester United to let them have Danny Welbeck on loan. The exciting 18-year-old is much coveted by Sir Alex Ferguson, and the Reds boss initially turned down Rangers' first overture on Monday. But the Hoops are ready to limit themselves to just a month's loan, rather than the rest of the season, for a player who brought about Rs' downfall in the Carling Cup. It was sub Welbeck who was upended by Peter Ramage in the box back in November that gave United the only goal from the spot courtesy of Carlos Tevez. Welbeck marked his Premiership debut at Old Trafford with a 30-yard free kick against Stoke the next week, and Rs management are desperate to turn around their woeful form in front of goal that's seen them win only once in seven outings, not including the 2-1 defeat at Burnley on Tuesday night. Boss Paulo Sousa admitted he was a worried man. He said: "During my 10 games I lost a lot of points like that, missing a lot of goals. "I have players in mind, the board knows already." Meanwhile , Rangers are ready to gamble a separate loan deal on Liam Miller - a player who ended up on Sunderland's transfer list a year ago because he lost his alarm clock. Former Black Cats boss Roy Keane fell out with the Republic of Ireland international over his poor time-keeping, but Hoops see Miller as prospective cover for Mikele Leigertwood, wanted by three clubs ready to shell out a £1m-plus for the midfielder. Sunderland will pay the lion's share of Miller's £16,000-aweek wages and will offer the 27-year-old to Hoops for free at the end of the season.
