Germany v Portugal
Germany captain Michael Ballack will miss Saturday's third-place play-off because of an inflamed left knee. Per Mertesacker and Arne Friedrich will be replaced by Robert Huth and Marcell Jansen, while Germany have been boosted by Miroslav Klose being declared fit. Goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has agreed to stand aside so veteran Oliver Khan can play in one last World Cup game, winning his 86th cap. Portugal defender Miguel misses the game because of a knee injury. Lehmann meanwhile has said he is happy to stand aside so that Kahn can get an appearance under his belt. Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann told BBC Sport: \"We owe Oliver that gesture to play him, and there is nobody in this world who can begrudge him that privilege. \"He has played a vital role, almost as a member of the backroom staff and has had a great influence on the development and nurturing of these young players.\"

Scolari backs under-fire Ronaldo
Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has defended Cristiano Ronaldo over his involvement in Wayne Rooney's sending-off and claims that he dives. \"Any referee in the world would have given that red card to Rooney in that situation,\" said the Brazilian. \"It was not Ronaldo's decision. I feel sorry for him.\" He added: \"One of his best qualities is his dribbling. Just like other players he sometimes falls down which is very natural. But he is not a diver.\" Ronaldo appeared to gesture to referee Horacio Elizondo to show Manchester United team-mate Rooney a card after an alleged stamp on Ricardo Carvalho in the quarter-final match against England. He also was seen to wink at the Portugal bench after Rooney was sent off. His actions seemingly cost him the Fifa young player of the World Cup award. Germany's 20-year-old Podolski took the award, and Holger Osieck, head of the Fifa technical study group that picked the winner, admitted that Ronaldo's antics had harmed his case. \"We want to have decent behaviour and I admit we were critical of this,\" said Osieck. \"We had a number of criteria but we have to admit players of that age do have their weaknesses and are not fully developed. \"Players should be role models and fair play is a consideration.\" The Portuguese winger later denied that he tried to get Rooney in trouble. Scolari believes Ronaldo may come in for some abuse when he returns to Premiership action. \"There might be problems in England now with the fans and the pressure,\" added Scolari. Meanwhile, Scolari reserved praise for Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson for his handling of Ronaldo. \"He has improved a lot and developed more skills since joining Manchester United and working with Ferguson and assistant coach Carlos Queiroz.\"

Germany are motivated - Klinsmann
Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann has insisted that his team will be motivated to win the third-place play-off against Portugal on Saturday. Opposite number Luiz Felipe Scolari has criticised the fixture, saying it was difficult to enthuse his players. But Klinsmann insisted Saturday's match in Stuttgart was valuable, saying: \"It has something, it is a World Cup game. \"We want to be third and we are going to give it our best and try to give our fans a good game.\" The match takes place in Klinsmann's home town of Stuttgart, although the Germany coach would much rather have been in Berlin for the final. But he said: \"We want to give a good performance on Saturday to give the supporters something to cheer about. \"We wanted to be in Berlin for the big final but we have to settle for this mini-final in Stuttgart.\" Klinsmann will have Miroslav Klose available after the Werder Bremen striker was declared fit on Friday. Klose will pass Klinsmann's career total of 11 World Cup goals if he scores twice against Portugal. The Werder Bremen striker is also leading the race for the World Cup Golden Shoe, awarded to the tournament's leading scorer, with five goals. But Klose said he was motivated to win the third-place play-off, rather than the Golden Shoe. \"It would be great to be top scorer because then at least one title would remain in Germany,\" Klose said. \"But everyone knows I am a team player and I am thinking only of the game.\"
