Ferguson returns for Paris match
Barry Ferguson will lead Scotland out at the Parc des Princes for the Euro 2008 qualifier against France. The Rangers midfielder is certain to start in Paris after missing the 3-1 win over Lithuania through suspension. Scotland coach Andy Watson indicated that Ferguson will slot back into the midfield for Wednesday's crucial game. He said: "I would think that with Barry being captain and being one of our key players, then all being well he should be fit and available for selection." Kenny Miller, Russell Anderson and Gary Naismith withdrew from the squad before Saturday's victory at Hampden. But there are no new injury worries for the Scottish management team. "Everyone trained and there is obviously the bumps and knocks that you get after games which take a day or two to settle down," added Watson. "But everyone is in fine fettle." Manager Alex McLeish has indicated that he will switch from a 4-4-2 set-up to a more cautious 4-5-1. Ferguson's return to the middle of the park will be at the expense of a striker. Kris Boyd was on target against Lithuania but McLeish may opt for Garry O'Connor or Craig Beattie, who offer more of a physical presence and a stronger running game. Derby winger Gary Teale could also drop from the starting line-up, with Celtic pair Gary Caldwell and Paul Hartley contenders for his place. With Barcelona striker Thierry Henry suspended, David Trezeguet is likely to partner Nicolas Anelka in the French attack. France sit on top of the group after the 0-0 draw against World Cup winners Italy at the San Siro on Saturday Scotland's gutsy victory over Lithuania saw them leapfrog the Azzurri into second place, a point behind Raymond Domenech's men. Georgia's late equaliser at home to Ukraine also helped Scotland's qualification chances, a favourable turn of events not missed by Watson. McLeish's right-hand-man said: "It was a good weekend. First and foremost, we got our own result right. "We were always going to be looking for results elsewhere. "Georgia got a late draw against Ukraine, who we see as being one of the top challengers, and the Italy and France game ended up a draw so all in all, we gained two points on our main rivals."
