Ferguson misses out for Scotland
Captain Barry Ferguson is not included in the Scotland squad for the European Championship qualifiers with the Faroe Islands and Lithuania. The 28-year-old midfielder has yet to feature for Rangers this season as he recovers from a heel injury. Andy Webster does not make the 23-man pool since he has been inactive as his club future remains uncertain. Defenders Robbie Neilson and Stephen McManus have been selected by manager Walter Smith for the first time. Hearts full-back Neilson, Celtic centre-half McManus were at the recent squad get-together in St Andrews but have not been in a competitive squad before. Motherwell goalkeeper Graeme Smith is the only other uncapped player in the pool. Jackie McNamara, Shaun Maloney, Ian Murray, Steven Caldwell and Chris Burke miss out through injury. But midfielder Gary Teale is included despite missing the start of Wigan's season with an ankle problem. Smith revealed that Rangers winger Burke would have been involved had he not suffered an ankle injury in Wednesday's friendly with Zenit St Petersburg. \"Unfortunately, circumstances for Chris and his club changed and we will have to do without him,\" said Smith. \"He is out for a period of time, which will go beyond the next two games, so he is out.\" Smith will delay naming a new captain in the absence of Ferguson. He said: \"We will wait and see. There are a number of players who have captained their clubs previously so we will decide when we get them together.\" The campaign kick-off against the Faroes at Celtic Park on 2 September and the Scots travel to Kaunas four days later.
