Espanyol 3-0 Werder Bremen
Espanyol took a huge step towards the Uefa Cup final with a convincing win over Werder Bremen in the first leg of the semi-final. Moises Hurtado headed Espanyol in front in the first half and after the break Walter Pandiani headed a second. Werder were forced to play most of the second half with 10 men after goalkeeper Tim Wiese was sent off for a foul on Raul Tamudo in the 58th minute. The third came near the end as Ferran Corominas finished a counter-attack. Werder, riding high in second place in the Bundesliga, were widely tipped as a favourites for the trophy. But the German side had little answer to the pace of Espanyol's counter-attacks and threat from set pieces. Panidani's goal was the 11th in this season's competition for the former Birmingham striker, extending his lead as top scorer in the Uefa Cup. The final takes place at Hampden Park in Scotland on 16 May. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Espanyol: Iraizoz, Lacruz, Torrejon, Jarque, David Garcia, Moises, Rufete (Coro 83), Riera, De la Pena (Jonatas 78), Pandiani (Ito 73), Tamudo.
