England Women 4-0 Austria Women
England moved four points clear at the top of their Women's World Cup qualifying group with an edgy win over Austria at the Priestfield Stadium. Austrian defender Sonja Spieler turned the ball into her own net to set England on their way after 36 minutes. England wasted a host of chances before a late goal rush sealed the victory. Fara Williams swept in Kelly Smith's pass on 85 minutes before Sue Smith headed home and Jody Handley struck from close range in stoppage time. Despite a below-par performance, England boss Hope Powell was satisfied to come away with the win. "It was all about the three points," Powell said. "It's the end of our season and there were some tired legs out there, and Austria are difficult to break down. "But the girls persevered and got their just rewards. Four goals and three points - I'm happy with that." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- England: Brown (Everton); Johnson (Everton), White (Arsenal), Phillip (Arsenal), Unitt (Everton); Chapman (Charlton Athletic), Williams (Everton); Smith (Arsenal); Carney (Birmingham City), Barr (Charlton Athletic) (sub Handley (Everton) 59), Yankey (Arsenal) (sub Smith (Leeds United).
