Ecclestone slams Premier League plans
Formula 1 boss and QPR co-owner Bernie Ecclestone has become the latest figurehead to rubbish Premier League plans to play some of their league matches abroad. The Briton is a driving force behind F1's expansion into countries such as Malaysia and Bahrain, with Singapore set to host the sport's first ever night race later this year. And, based on his experience, Ecclestone is adamant that a 39th game for each club, which would be played overseas, is not a positive development. "The current idea the Premier League is putting forward isn't very good," he told the Daily Mirror. "They probably wouldn't find it very easy to convince someone in Singapore to have Wigan playing somebody over there." Instead, he argued, there is an alternative. "If somebody said to me today 'what would you do?', I'd have the top four clubs who are known worldwide and I'd want them playing six matches against each other in a mini-league. "I'd run it completely separately and export it to whoever wanted to buy it. Nothing to do with anything (else). Not sharing the money with the rest of the league or anything like that." The Premier League's plans have so far been meet with widespread scepticism, with few voicing any support.
