Fleet help Smith rebuild career
Ebbsfleet United manager Liam Daish is helping former player Ross Smith back into the game after he was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition.
The ex-Gravesend, Margate and Dagenham defender, 28, was playing football in his native Canada when he was diagnosed with a bicuspid valve in his heart.
Having had surgery he is back in England to get clearance to resume his career, and has trained with the Fleet.
"He's a super human being," Daish told Radio Kent.
"Having worked with Ross before and knowing how fit he was and how hard he worked, it's amazing. Fitness to him was never a problem.
"He's not going back to earn a million pounds a year. He's as honest as the day's long and he just wants to play his football and shows he's got a real hunger for the game.
"Ross's character shows not all footballers are in it for the money."
Smith made 58 Conference appearances while with the Fleet - having joined them from Margate in the summer of 2005.
He signed for Dagenham & Redbridge in June 2007 but was released the following May, when the club were promoted to the Football League.
