Capello sure England will qualify
England coach Fabio Capello has promised he will guide the team to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa despite their failure to qualify for Euro 2008. Capello replaced Steve McClaren after England missed out on qualification for this summer's tournament in Austria and Switzerland, which was won by Spain. "We're a very good team," said Capello. "For us, the opponent's not important, the important thing is what we do. "We will qualify for the World Cup in South Africa. I am sure of it." Losing twice in Euro 2008 qualifying to Croatia was the key to England's failure, and the teams will meet again in the qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup. Capello saw Croatia in action three times at the Euros this summer, but only Spain really caught his eye. "I watched some games live and saw the rest on TV," said England's Italian coach. "Only Spain played in a different style. Only the characteristics of their play was different. But I have a lot of confidence in my team and I think we will be OK. "The level at the Euros was good, we have that same level or better. "I must transmit the spirit of those teams to the players to play with confidence. In our four games so far, step by step we have been getting better." England play the Czech Republic in a friendly on 20 August, and having tried out four different captains so far, Capello refused to give any hints as to who he would pick this time. "I will announce the captain the day before the game," he said. "I will speak with the captain just a moment before I tell the rest of the squad, then everyone else will find out."
