Duncan back on U's comeback trail
Cambridge's Andy Duncan stepped up his comeback from injury by playing an hour of a friendly against Braintree. The 28-year-old defender has not figured this season after damaging a thigh in August. Manager Jimmy Quinn told his club's website: \"He's a good player and he's what we need at the moment. It will be like signing a new player. \"We need to have a look at him to see how he feels and whether he feels he can get through a game on Friday.\"

Peck joins board at Abbey Stadium
Cambridge United have appointed Geoff Peck as their new finance director. The Oxfordshire-based Australian succeeds Nick Pomery, who stood down from the board at the Abbey Stadium at the end of August. \"He's been accountant to Barry Hills, one of the top horse racing trainers in the country, for 12 years,\" chairman Lee Power told the club website. \"Although he will continue to work with Barry on a daily basis, he's agreed to take the position as a favour for me.\"

Cambridge Utd v Oxford Utd
On-loan left-back James Meredith could make his Cambridge debut on Friday. Defender Andy Duncan could be on the bench after recovering from a thigh injury but Mark Peters (foot) and Tommy Jaszczun (hamstring) are still out. Oxford will be without leading scorer Rob Duffy, who is suspended, so Steve Basham will step in. Defender Rufus Brevett has recovered from a knock while hamstring-victim Gavin Johnson could feature after appearing for the reserves in midweek.

Cambridge sign Meredith on loan
Derby defender James Meredith has joined Cambridge on a month's loan. The 18-year-old has been given squad number 29 by U's boss Jimmy Quinn and could figure against Conference leaders Oxford on Friday evening. Meredith has yet to play a first-team game at Derby after coming through the club's youth scheme. But the Australian, who can also play on the left-hand side of midfield, was given a two-year professional contract at Pride Park in the summer.

Conference pacesetters Oxford made easy work of rivals Cambridge United, with Yemi Odubade twice on the scoresheet in a comfortable victory. In the 27th minute Andrew Burgess fed Odubade from the right, and the striker notched his first from close range. After the break Rufus Brevett crossed for Chris Hargreaves to nod in Oxford's second goal of the game. Barry Quinn then headed against the Cambridge woodwork before Odubade converted a Phil Gilcrist knock down.

Cambridge striker plans comeback
Cambridge United striker Robbie Simpson is set to make his comeback from injury in a friendly game on Tuesday. Simpson has been out for six weeks after damaging medial knee ligaments. But the 21-year-old summer signing from Cambridge City, who scored once in five starts before being injured, is set to feature against Huntingdon Town. Andy Duncan, who made his first appearance of the season last Friday, is also expected to play in the fund-raising fixture at Jubilee Park.

U's boss Quinn releases Robinson
Cambridge United have released defender Trevor Robinson after the 22-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements by manager Jimmy Quinn. The former Millwall player had been on non-contract terms at the club and had started seven games since August. But Quinn told the club website: \"He's done well but is not what I'm after.\" Former Leicester trainee Liam Norval has also been allowed to go but loanees James Meredith and Ben Gill will be permitted to play in the FA Cup.

Boss Quinn aims to lift spirits
Cambridge boss Jimmy Quinn says his main job this week will be to raise the spirits of his players after their 2-0 loss at Northwich in the FA Cup. Quinn told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: \"We'll remain positive because we have a lot more games to play this season even though we're out of the Cup. \"We were looking forward to a good Cup run but the league is the priority. \"It's my job at the start of this week to keep the players' heads up and let us be positive for Saturday's game.\"

Grays Athletic v Cambridge Utd
Left-back Ronnie Bull could make his debut for Grays after signing until the end of the season. Grays will have Justin Richards up front after he joined from Peterborough with Aaron McLean moving the other way. Cambridge boss Jimmy Quinn is hopeful Tommy Jaszczun will have recovered from his lengthy hamstring injury. But Josh Simpson has suffered a hamstring strain and is unlikely to play while Andy Duncan misses out as he is still suspended.

Smith departs Cambridge on loan
Cambridge United midfielder Stephen Smith has joined Eastern Counties Premier side CRC on a month's loan. CRC are mainly comprised of Cambridge's reserve and youth players - but remain a separate entity from United, so Smith has formally gone there on loan. The 20-year-old made his U's debut in April 2004 when only 17, but has only started five league games this season. He made his debut for CRC on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Mildenhall Town.

Cambridge hit by Gier injury blow
Cambridge defender Rob Gier could be out of action for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury. Gier limped off before half-time in Cambridge United's 1-1 draw at Grays Athletic on Saturday. The injury comes at a bad time for Gier as it is thought the 26-year-old was close to agreeing to a longer deal. Meanwhile, fellow defender Mark Peters is in the final stages of recovery from a foot injury and is expected to join full training next week.

Cambridge to sign ex-Crawley man
Cambridge United have secured a deal to sign ex-Crawley captain Danny Brown. The 26-year-old has agreed non-contract terms with the U's after being released by Crawley last week due to their ongoing financial problems. Former Barnet and Oxford midfielder Brown will then sign an 18-month deal in January to keep him at the Abbey Stadium until the end of next season. U's boss Jimmy Quinn told his club?s website: \"He ticks all the right boxes. He is a winner on and off the pitch.\"

Simpson awaits doctor's verdict
Cambridge striker Robbie Simpson must wait to see when he can return to action, after he suffered a deep head wound at the weekend. Ths 21-year-old was stretchered off after 34 minutes of their 3-0 win over Gravesend & Northfleet on Saturday. Simpson had to have 12 stitches, which will be removed this weekend when the U's club doctor will assess him. Meanwhile, United midfielder Josh Simpson should return to training next week after a hamstring injury.

Quinn expects rollercoaster ride
Cambridge boss Jimmy Quinn wants to see greater consistency from his side but admits he thinks this season will be full of ups and downs. Quinn told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: \"It seems that since I've been here that we get a good result and instead of kicking on we take a backward step. \"It is going to be a rollercoaster ride. We've got to stick together as a lot of things are out of our control. \"So we need to get behind the lads in order that we can build for next year.\"

Cambridge defensive pair injured
Cambridge boss Jimmy Quinn has lost the services of defenders Tommy Jaszczun and Andy Duncan, who may both require surgery on new injuries. Jaszczun has fractured a bone under his toe joint, while Duncan appears to have a cartilage problem in his knee. \"It's one thing after another since I came in,\" Quinn told the club website. \"Mark Peters has just returned to training and hasn't played a game, but we may have to throw him straight back in this weekend.\" Jaszczun only recently returned from a hamstring injury, while Duncan has played just three games this season following a thigh problem. U's striker Robbie Simpson hopes to resume full training next week after having sutures in a head injury removed.
