Lewer is new Cambridge assistant
Cambridge United have appointed Alan Lewer as their new assistant manager. Lewer, 51, has previously assisted at Crawley, Chester, Doncaster and Boston as well as managing Nuneaton Borough, Telford and Forest Green Rovers. He told the club's website: "Cambridge has a fantastic fanbase. The potential is here. "I feel that the club is ready to go back into the Football League, and if we do get out of the conference I think we can kick on further again."

Cambridge capture striker Rendell
Cambridge United boss Jimmy Quinn has continued his signing spree with the capture of striker Scott Rendell from Conference rivals Crawley Town. Rendell has agreed a two-year deal to become Quinn's fifth new signing since the end of the season. The 22-year-old finished the campaign as Crawley's top scorer with 12 goals after joining the club from Reading. Rendell played under assistant Alan Lewer at Crawley and has had loan spells at Aldershot and Forest Green.

Midfielder seals Cambridge exit
Midfielder Josh Simpson has left Cambridge United to seek first-team football elsewhere. The 20-year-old had initially been offered a new deal, but Cambridge boss Jimmy Quinn was unwilling to guarantee him a first-team place. Meanwhile, the U's have retracted their offer of a new contract they made to striker Daniel Chillingworth, 25. Star striker Robbie Simpson, 22, is also expected to leave after Coventry City made an offer to the player. However, as Simpson is under 24, Cambridge would be entitled to a fee if he moves.

Cambridge unhappy over Power deal
Cambridge United chairman Lee Power has slammed the outcome of a transfer tribunal which ordered Coventry City to pay £40,000 for striker Robbie Simpson. The fee could rise to £130,000 based on appearances but Power was unhappy with the deal which gives the U's only a five per cent sell-on clause. "The up-front payment and sell-on clause is nothing short of disgraceful. "I've never heard of such a low figure and we're just flabbergasted," Power told his club's website. Simpson, 22, scored 17 goals for Cambridge in last season's Conference but rejected the offer of a new deal to join the Sky Blues. Power added: "You see players moving in the Premiership for millions and still getting a 15-20% sell-on. "This is a shambles and if this is the way forward in football then football at lower levels is doomed."

U's fined for disciplinary record
Cambridge United have been fined £3,000 by the FA for their poor disciplinary record last season. The Blue Square Premier club has also been given an additional £3,000 suspended fine. An FA disciplinary panel handed out the punishment after the U's received nine red cards and 86 cautions last season. Cambridge boss Jimmy Quinn had hoped for just a warning after allowing all those players sent off last season to leave the club.

Cambridge United striker Daniel Chillingworth is facing a further two months out of action after being told he needs surgery on an ankle injury. He was injured in pre-season and further tests have revealed damage to the joint which requires an operation. Quinn salutes Cambridge recovery
Boss Jimmy Quinn praised Cambridge's second-half recovery after a late goal helped them draw 1-1 with Ebbsfleet on Monday and remain unbeaten. "We were carrying one or two paople in the first half, but in the second half the team responded brilliantly," the U's manager insisted. "We would have lost that game last year, but we showed great character. "I'm not one for excuses - we played on Saturday, but so did Ebbsfleet and so did everybody else."

Cambridge rocked by Boylan injury
Cambridge United striker Lee Boylan is facing a spell out with a foot injury. The U's are already without frontman Daniel Chillingworth as he recovers from an ankle operation. And Boylan, who has scored twice since signing for Cambridge in the summer, has now been sidelined with the injury he sustained at Weymouth last Friday. Boss Jimmy Quinn told the club website: "He's had a reaction afterwards and when he came in it was very swollen and sore. He could be out for weeks."

Cambridge issue warning to rivals
Cambridge United boss Jimmy Quinn feels his side have sent out a message to the rest of the Blue Square Premier after Saturday's win over Stevenage. The U's beat the league leaders 2-1 to secure their best ever start to a season going 11 games unbeaten. Quinn told SSB: "A lot of teams in our division will look at this result and take note knowing they'll have a tough game against us. "We are working hard and the players are sticking well to their task."

Cambridge United defender Dan Gleeson has been called up into the England C squad to play Finland on Wednesday. The 22-year-old former Notts County player was on the standby list along with striker Scott Rendell. Defender Michael Morrison has been offered a new deal by Cambridge United. The England C international, 19, who has started almost 100 games for the U's has already rejected one offer and will be out of contract this summer. Chairman Lee Power told the Cambridge Evening News: "We've made Michael a fantastic offer for this level. "I think he'd benefit from staying with us for another year or two. We will give him enough time to think about it, we've asked for an early decision."

Chillingworth leaves U's on loan
Cambridge United striker Daniel Chillingworth has joined Blue Square South side St Albans City on loan. The 26-year-old, who is in his second spell with the U's, recently returned to training after having an ankle operation earlier this season. He will join City until 12 January to build up his match fitness. Meanwhile, in his absence, United thrashed King's Lynn 5-0 on Saturday in the FA Trophy first round, with Scott Rendell scoring twice.

On-loan Knights leaves Cambridge
Striker Darryl Knights has returned to Yeovil following two months on loan at Cambridge United. Knights, 19, scored twice for the U's, whose manager Jimmy Quinn now has a number of players back from injury. "There are players who have been with us through pre-season and done well and we need to involve those players," Quinn told Cambridge's website. And Quinn has told Michael Morrison he should try and secure a move in January after rejecting a new contract.

Duo sign new Cambridge contracts
Cambridge United duo Lee Boylan and Danny Potter have signed new contracts to keep them at the Abbey Stadium. Goalkeeper Potter, 28, has agreed a one-year extension to his current deal to stay with the U's until June 2010. Meanwhile, they have taken up their option of a further 12-month deal for striker Boylan, 29, who has now signed up until the end of next season. Boss Jimmy Quinn has also offered new contracts to a further five players, including defender Mark Albrighton.
