Briatore denies interference
QPR chairman Flavio Briatore has refuted claims that ex-boss Paulo Sousa left the club because board officials had a direct influence on team affairs.
Sousa, the club's fourth manager since Briatore and Amit Bhatia took over in November 2007, had his contract terminated last week after a disagreement with the board.
Sousa's predecessor Iain Dowie also walked out on the club in similar circumstances earlier in the season with rumours that Briatore disagreed with his team selection.
The club released a statement after the former Portugal international's sacking last week urging supporters to be patient with the current regime amid rumours that some fans were becoming disillusioned with the direction the club are taking.
"That is incorrect. Paulo picked the team all the time," Briatore told the club's official website.
"As a board, we spoke about wanting to see QPR play a more attacking, aggressive brand of football, in a 4-4-2 formation and he promised us he would do that.
"There were two incidents which he disappointed us. When we beat Preston before Christmas, Paulo made six changes for the next match and we only drew at Charlton, who were bottom of the league.
"And against Ipswich, he stuck to a 4-5-1 formation, when we were at home and that is when we became very disappointed.
"I was very surprised to see Damion Stewart on the bench and Radek Cerny not involved for that match.
"But I would like to repeat, I never once told Paulo, or any other coach for that matter, which team to pick."
Despite the club looking certain to miss out on promotion via the play-offs this season Briatore is convinced that the club are going in the right direction.
"We are progressing very well," he added.
"On the pitch, we're already up to the 60 point mark this season, which hasn't been achieved by QPR in many years at this level.
"Off the pitch, the infrastructure is improving all the time. We have invested over £34million in to the club.
"We have signed 17 players. Financially we have deals among the best in English football, let alone the Championship.
"We are looking for a 360 degree improvement in all areas and whilst it will take time, with the support of the whole QPR family, we are progressing well and as a board, we are confident we will reach our goals."
mmmmm a distinct kipper smell amongst that statement.
