Benfica 3-0 Celtic
Celtic lost in Lisbon as Benfica took their revenge in the Stadium of Light and Gary Caldwell endured a nightmare.
Benfica surged ahead after 10 minutes when Nelson's centre was directed by the hapless Caldwell into his own net.
Then, from Quim's long kick, the ball glanced off Caldwell's head and into the path of Nuno Gomes who drove home. The exact reversal of the Celtic Park scoreline was complete when a smooth Benfica move was sealed with Andrei Karyaka slotting beyond Artur Boruc.
Evander Sno was restored to the Celtic midfield for Jiri Jarosik, while Kenny Miller replaced Maciej Zurawski.
Miller had the lone-striker role with support from Shaun Maloney as Benfica opted for Gomes and Fabrizio Miccoli in attack.
Celtic suffered an early setback when Nelson targeted Miccoli with a cross only for Caldwell to divert the ball past a powerless Boruc.
Boosted by that breakthrough the home side heaped more pressure on Celtic with Boruc forced to save Konstantinos Katsouranis' drive from distance.
Caldwell's night to forget continued when a long punt from Benfica keeper Quim glanced off the Celtic defender's head and fell neatly for Gomes to finish with aplomb and claim his first Champions League goal in eight years.
There was a further warning for Celtic when a snap-shot from Miccoli flew just over Boruc's crossbar.
Stephen Pearson was presented with a chance to pull one back for Celtic shortly before the break but, from Miller's pass, the young midfielder slipped his shot wide.
Celtic introduced Aiden McGeady after the interval and he injected more purpose into their play but a recovery was not forthcoming.
Gomes nearly added to the visitors' woes when he curled a delicated effort narrowly wide.
But Benfica celebrated their third with Karyaka shooting through the legs of who else but Caldwell and past the outstretched Boruc.
Shunsuke Nakamura's injury-time free-kick was palmed away by the Benfica keeper.
