Beckham recalled to Spain by Real
England captain David Beckham will not see his team-mates take on Poland on Wednesday after being called back to Spain for training by Real Madrid. Sent off against Austria on Saturday, Beckham is suspended for the Group Six game but had wanted to watch the match. "We've received a formal request from Real advising us they require Beckham to travel back to Spain for training," said the Football Association. Beckham is expected to play for Real in Saturday's Madrid derby at Atletico. Despite winning their first game of the season against Cadiz, Real slumped to three defeats against Celta Vigo, Lyon - in the Champions League - and Espanyol. However, Beckham has underpinned their resurgence, with four consecutive victories against Athletic Bilbao, Alaves, Olympiacos and Mallorca.

Beckham wins appeal over red card
David Beckham has had the red card he received in Real Madrid's defeat to Valencia on Sunday rescinded. The England captain was booked for dissent and received a second caution for applauding the referee. The club appealed, claiming that Beckham's behaviour had been neither "scornful nor sarcastic". The Spanish Football Federation decided that the clapping formed part of his initial protest at a decision and did not warrant a second yellow card. The 30-year-old will now be free to play for Real against Deportivo la Coruna on Wednesday. Beckham was dismissed in the 87th minute of Real's 2-1 defeat to Valencia, a result which meant they missed the chance to go top of La Liga. In his post-match report, the referee noted that Beckham had behaved in "a mocking way after being reprimanded". However, the Competition Commission, which heard Real's appeal, concluded that Beckham was not being confrontational. "The clapping took place when the player's back was turned to the referee and when he was returning to his position on the pitch," it said. "Although the action is worthy of reproach it was not done in direct confrontation and is seen as part of his original protest. "Neither the incidents themselves nor the referee's report suggest that there was an intention to insult the referee."

Beckham injury fears played down
Real Madrid coach Wanderley Luxemburgo has played down fears over the fitness of David Beckham after he limped out of the 3-1 defeat at Deportivo La Coruna. The 30-year-old midfielder, playing because his red card against Valencia had been rescinded, left the field in the 53rd minute. But Luxemburgo told the club website: "The substitution of Beckham should be categorised as normal. "He was not playing well because he began the match with a little pain." The England captain was sent off during Real Madrid's defeat by Valencia on Sunday after receiving a second caution for applauding the referee. But he was allowed to feature against Deportivo after his red card was rescinded by the Spanish Football Federation. However, after being substituted for an ineffectual performance during Wednesday's defeat, Beckham was later seen walking gingerly out of the stadium. The former Manchester United star recently revealed he had been playing with back pain.
