Man Utd 2-0 Arsenal Wayne Rooney and Ji-Sung Park scored as Manchester United won their ninth successive Premiership match.
Rooney controlled Mikael Silvestre's brilliant cross before shooting past Jens Lehmann and later crossed for Park to score from close range.
Lehmann had superbly saved from Rooney twice before his goal, while Kolo Toure appeared to divert a strike from the forward on to the post with his hand.
United keeper Edwin van der Sar made good saves from Robin van Persie.
The result means Sir Alex Ferguson's team move back to within seven points of Chelsea, who defeated West Ham 4-1 earlier on Sunday.
United have five games left to catch the reigning champions, including a match at Stamford Bridge against Jose Mourinho's team.
For Arsenal, though, their ninth away defeat in the Premiership this season leaves them five points behind north London rivals Tottenham in the race for fourth place.
It could have been different for Arsene Wenger's team if they had converted one of their early chances - in a match played in front of a Premiership record crowd of 70,908.
Despite relegating Thierry Henry to the bench Arsenal made the early running. Gary Neville made a superb challenge to deny Emmanuel Adebayor after he had been played through by Alexander Hleb and Van der Sar saved from Van Persie.
It took United a while to settle but eventually they started to threaten, Lehmann punching clear a Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick and then making two superb saves to deny Rooney.
Each time Rooney shot across Lehmann, the first from 20 yards and the second considerably closer but from a tighter angle.
Arsenal looked to break quickly and Van der Sar made a superb save low to his left to thwart Van Persie.
Van Nistelrooy, starting ahead of Louis Saha, started to assert his influence on the contest, shooting wide from a tight angle and forcing Lehmann into action with a header.
And it was a superb through ball from Van Nistelrooy that led to the major incident of the first half.
He played Rooney through and his team-mate took the ball around Lehmann before shooting goalwards.
Toure, struggling to regain his feet, appeared to handle as he dived to his right to try to stop Rooney's strike. The ball was deflected against the post but the incident went unnoticed by referee Graham Poll.
Rooney was not to be denied after the break - the 20-year-old smashing the ball past Lehmann after taking one touch to control Silvestre's cross.
Arsenal went in search of an equaliser, with Adebayor shooting narrowly over and Van Persie failing to convert Emmanuel Eboue's cross.
Eboue brilliantly eluded Rooney before cutting inside but his ball to Van Persie was struck firmly, making it difficult for his team-mate to make a decisive contact.
Arsenal introduced Henry with 18 minutes left but Park's goal took the match beyond the away team.

Wingers Wayne Routledge and Ognjen Koroman could also be in line for places in the starting line-up.

England boost for Campbell & Cole Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes defenders Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole will be fit for England's World Cup campaign this summer.
Campbell, 31, will face Portsmouth on Wednesday after two-and-a-half months on the sidelines at Highbury.
Cole, 25, is set to return to training on Monday after being hampered by injuries since October 2005.
Wenger said: "I have spoken to England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson and told him they will be ready for selection."
The Gunners are Wenger's priority, atlhough he added: "England is not on my mind but I would be happy if Sol can combine both. I want him to go to the World Cup."
Campbell was taken off at half-time during Arsenal's encounter with West Ham on 1 February.
He walked out of Highbury after being withdrawn and has since been hampered by ankle and toe injuries.
If Arsenal win their Champions League semi-final against Villarreal, Campbell will have a maximum of nine games for the club to show he is worth a place in England's squad for the World Cup finals in Germany.
Centre-half Campbell is thought to have dropped behind Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand and Chelsea's John Terry in England's pecking order.
However, he revealed earlier this month that England boss Eriksson had reassured him that he would be picked - if he returned to action for the Gunners this season.
Campbell will replace the rested Philippe Senderos against Portsmouth and Wenger said: "It gives Sol a good opportunity to show that he is ready for us as well as for England.
"I feel he is ready for us but he knows he needs to play before the World Cup if he wants to be selected.
"I believe he has the quality to be first choice for England."
Meanwhile, Gunners full-back Cole is also poised for a comeback after sustaining an ankle injury when on duty for the reserves in February.
Before that match he had been struggling with a broken bone in a foot and a thigh problem.
Wenger said: "Ashley will come back into the training squad on Monday.
"So far he has only practised with the fitness coach. He will practise with everybody again on Monday.
"He will not play against Villarreal unless we have a disaster before that but he should be fit for the last four or five games."

Arsenal 3-1 West Brom Dennis Bergkamp came on to score one and create one as Arsenal stepped up their challenge for fourth spot and dent West Brom's survival hopes.
The home side looked to be heading for a comfortable victory after Alexander Hleb's skill and power put them ahead.
Skipper Nigel Quashie capitalised on an Emmanuel Eboue mistake to give the visitors hope after 72 minutes.
But Bergkamp set up Pires to put the Gunners ahead and then sealed the win with a delightful curling shot.
The stadium was awash with orange as the home fans donned the colour of Bergkamp's native Holland to pay tribute to the Dutchman's 11-year spell at Highbury.
And with Bergkamp looking on from the bench, the Arsenal line-up was in need of his creativity in the first half.
The quiet start favoured West Brom as the visitors set about frustrating the Arsenal attack and even posed problems for the hosts.
What a fitting tribute for Bergkamp to score on Dennis Bergkamp Day - one of the greatest footballers ever!

Quashie saw a speculative long-range drive drift wide of the upright, while Neil Clement slashed a free-kick over.
Thierry Henry missed Arsenal's best chance of the half when he pushed his shot wide of the post when clean through on goal.
The Baggies defence looked to be heading into the break level, but Hleb powered Arsenal ahead just before the interval.
The Belarus international charged into the box, exchanged a neat one-two with Henry and drilled a left-foot shot into the roof of the net.
Arsenal started the second half with the same zest that they finished the first with and the superb Curtis Davies twice kept Henry at bay.
But clear chances were kept to a premium and for all their possession, Arsenal struggled to test Tomasz Kuszczak.
With Wednesday's Champions League semi-final in mind, boss Arsene Wenger withdrew Henry with Emmanuel Adebayor replacing the Frenchman.
The loudest cheer of the afternoon was saved for Bergkamp's introduction midway through the second half as the Gunners looked to kill off the match.
But with Arsenal minds on the substitutions, West Brom countered and caught the Gunners defence sleeping and drew level.
Quashie capitalised on Eboue's error and neatly fired home from the edge of the area on 72 minutes.
West Brom had a decent shout for a penalty turned down 10 minutes from time as Davies went down after Eboue looked to have clipped the centre back.
Arsenal responded four minutes later when the two substitutes Pires and Bergkamp combined and the Frenchman poked home past two defenders.
But the day was to belong to Bergkamp who sealed the win with a trademark curling shot at the end.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on Bergkamp:
"He never loses the class and after 10 fantastic years he proves that he can still play.
"It would have been sad not to have brought him on and I felt we were looking for his quality to create the opportunities we needed at the end.
"We showed a great reaction at 1-1 and I'm pleased with the chances we made."
West Brom manager Bryan Robson:
"I'm disappointed because we started to play some decent football in the second half but the players simply got too excitable at 1-1.
"That was the main reason we lost because when we started to attack and go forward we left holes for Arsenal.
"It was a good opportunity to pick up an invaluable point after pulling back to 1-1 but we got too excited."

Cup key to Henry deal - Adebayor Arsenal forward Emmanuel Adebayor says Champions League success is the key to keeping star striker Thierry Henry.
Henry, 28, is yet to renew his deal, which ends in 2007, but Adebayor thinks he could stay on if the Gunners beat Villarreal to reach the final.
"Success in this tournament could mean the difference between Thierry agreeing a new contract or not," Adebayor told the News of the World newspaper.
"This game is so important for the club going forwards."
Arsenal face Villarreal in the first-leg of the semi-final at Highbury on Wednesday 19 April, a match described by Adebayor as "huge".
Despite reaching the last four of the Champions League for the first time, the Gunners have been disappointing in the Premiership and domestic cup competitions.
That has fuelled speculation that Henry is set to end his seven-year spell at the club this summer.
The Frenchman has been linked with a move to Spanish rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid and Italian giants Inter Milan.
Henry has made no secret of both his loyalty to Arsenal and his ambition to finish his career with a club capable of winning silverware.
The 30-year-old says he will decide on 9 June whether he can fulfil both criteria at the Emirates Stadium next season.

Henry won't be rushed into deal Arsenal striker Thierry Henry insists he does not owe the fans an early decision over his future.
Henry, 28, is yet to renew his deal, which ends in 2007, and has been linked with a move to Spanish side Barcelona.
"Who do I owe, and for what?" said Henry. "Don't you see my commitment on the pitch?
"I'm a human being and need time to take my decision. I don't think about the word 'owe'. I owe something to my Dad, yes, who put me on this planet."
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger rejected the idea that winning the Champions League would actually spur Henry to leave in search of fresh challenges.
But Wenger added that winning titles was not the only reason for a player to choose a club.
"The best way to keep your best players is always to win but it is not enough," said Wenger.
"There is more to it to than that. When you commit yourself to a club for a long period it is not just about winning.
"It is because you share the right values with the club and you play the kind of football you love to play. I like to think that is a better reason to stay here."
Frenchman Henry is Arsenal's all-time record scorer with 207 goals in seven years at Highbury.
He eclipsed Ian Wright's mark of 185 goals against Sparta Prague in October.

Arsenal v Villarreal Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas has recovered from a bruised foot in time for Wednesday's Champions League semi-final at Highbury.
Jose Antonio Reyes is suspended, while Freddie Ljungberg is expected to return to the squad after missing Saturday's Premiership win over West Brom.
Villarreal's first-choice centre-backs Gonzalo Rodriguez and Juan Manuel Pena are both ruled out.
Mariano Barbosa replaces suspended goalkeeper Sebastian Viera.
The Gunners are unlikely to rush England defender Sol Campbell back into action after he had surgery on his broken nose last week.
Long-term absentees Ashley Cole (ankle) and Lauren (knee) are both still sidelined.

Arsenal 1-0 Villarreal Kolo Toure's first-half goal edged Arsenal towards the Champions League final with a narrow victory against Villarreal at Highbury.
Toure turned home Aleksander Hleb's pass after 41 minutes to give Arsene Wenger's side a slender advantage.
Cesar Arzo headed Thierry Henry's shot off the line after the break as Arsenal struggled to break down Villarreal.
The Spanish side rarely threatened, although Juan Roman Riquelme and Marcos Senna forced saves from Jens Lehmann.
Arsenal were denied a crucial early breakthrough after 11 minutes when Henry slotted home Robert Pires' pass, but he was adjudged marginally offside.
Villarreal were well-organised, with the orchestrator Riquelme a constant threat.
He tested Lehmann from long range, then almost created an opening for Diego Forlan as the Spanish side grew in confidence.
But it was Arsenal who broke the deadlock four minutes before the interval, when Henry played in Hleb, whose cross was slotted in by Toure.
Villarreal responded instantly, with Lehmann forced to punch away Riquelme's free-kick.
Arsenal were then fortunate not to concede a penalty when Jose Mari was hauled down by Gilberto Silva, but Villarreal's appeals were waved away.
The Gunners almost doubled their advantage after 55 minutes when Emmanuel Eboue's cross was met by Henry, but Arzo recovered to clear off the line.
Lehmann had been relatively untroubled, but he was forced to scramble to make a low save from Senna's 20-yard drive.
Arsenal boss Wenger made a double change with 10 minutes to go, sending on Dennis Bergkamp and Robin Van Persie for Hleb and Freddie Ljungberg.
And Bergkamp almost snatched the crucial second in injury-time, but he was just beaten to the ball by Javi Venta as he looked to slide in Henry's cross.

Wenger cautious after Arsenal win Arsene Wenger remained cautious about Arsenal's chances of reaching the Champions League final after a narrow victory against Villarreal.
Kolo Toure's goal gave Arsenal a 1-0 win in the semi-final first leg.
Wenger said: "I believe it is a good result but we'll know after the second game. We wanted a second goal, but sometimes we were too nervous.
"We faced a good team, very strong in the midfield and we couldn't impose enough to create more chances."
Wenger added: "At home you never know what is enough in a semi-final and it is difficult to go forward.
"We want to keep a clean sheet in the second leg, and we have proved we can do that, but it is not enough to just go there and defend. We want to play our game and score goals.
"We have got Spurs on Saturday and then the second leg of the Champions League semi-final, so the next six days will define our season, but we are confident we can do it."
Villarreal striker Diego Forlan claimed his side had been denied a clear penalty in the first half when Gilberto Silva fouled Jose Mari, but referee Konrad Plautz waved away the appeals.
He said: "I think the decision of the referee on Jose Mari - that was a big penalty.
"He didn't see that and I think he was against us all game. I think if you see it on TV it was.
"But it was not all about the referee. We didn't play well and we lost."

Arsenal v Tottenham Arsenal defender Sol Campbell is unlikely to face his former club after breaking his nose against Portsmouth.
Left-back Ashley Cole is out for a further two weeks, despite making a midweek comeback for the reserves.
Spurs will give striker Mido (groin) a late fitness test and are already without skipper Ledley King (foot) and Jermaine Jenas (shin).
The visitors also have worries over Edgar Davids (ankle) and Anthony Gardner (shin).

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger:
"We are in a good position to win. We have the quality and we have come back into a very good position.
"Nobody thought we would come back to fight for fourth spot a few weeks ago.
"We have made a massive step forward but it is always about how you finish the job."
Tottenham striker Robbie Keane:
"The key against Arsenal is not to lose the game, that's the most important thing. If we get something, if we get a point there then great.
"But if we play the way we have been playing I think we have a great chance. We know Arsenal are right behind us, they have a game in hand and Saturday will be a massive game. Of course we are looking over our shoulders, it is only natural that we do.
"Over the last few weeks a lot people have been saying that Tottenham will slip up soon but at the moment we have not."

Legends say derby is biggest ever Arsenal legend Ian Wright says Saturday's meeting with Tottenham is the biggest north London derby ever.
The fifth-placed Gunners are four points behind Spurs with a game in hand as they chase a Champions League berth.
"It doesn't get bigger than qualifying for the Champions League outright," Wright told Sir Stanley. "The next four days make or break Arsenal's season."
Ex-Spurs skipper Gary Mabbutt agreed: "It really is a huge game, one of the most important Tottenham have faced."
Spurs have been in fourth place for most of the season and know victory in the last derby at Highbury would all but seal their European place.
Wright knows Arsenal cannot afford to slip up and cannot rely on winning the Champions League to book their place for next season.
"We need to beat Spurs to get closer and to try and cement this Champions League place in case it doesn't work out in the final - if they get there," added Wright, who was speaking at the launch of the Sure Fanzone World Cup venue in London.
"In my opinion this is the biggest north London derby ever.
"The semi-final of the FA Cup when we beat them 1-0 was a major game, but it will never match up to this one in terms of importance."
Mabbutt believes Spurs are now at a crucial point in their history: "All the games from now on are arguably the biggest set of games the club has faced," he told Sir Stanley.
"That may sound like an over-the-top statement, but to get back among the elite of Europe you have to be in the Champions League, and we've not even been fighting for a European place in the last decade.
"Being in the Champions League - it offers great finances and means you can attract the best players around - would be massive for the club."
Goalkeeping legend Ray Clemence, who made 240 league appearances for Tottenham, says Spurs would be happy to take a point from the contest.
"Tottenham don't have to win it whereas Arsenal do," Clemence told Sir Stanley. "And there is a massive amount at stake.
"It's not just a case of that fourth place and one side finishing above the other. There are also the financial implications of what Champions League will give.
"Spurs have not been in Europe for many years so the extra revenue will be a massive boost for them.
"Arsenal are moving to a new stadium and have got a massive financial commitment. I'm sure in their figures they will probably have looked at being in the Champions League."
SirStanleyBowles- 04-22-2006
Wenger holds firm over Pires deal Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has played down concerns about Robert Pires being offered a two-year deal by Champions League semi-final opponents Villarreal.
Pires is out of contract at Highbury during the summer with Wenger only prepared to give the 32-year-old a one-year contract.
"He is completely free to speak with whom he wants. I am not shocked by that and can understand that," said Wenger.
"I just hope that in the end, he will say 'I stay one more year at Arsenal'."
Arsenal will play Villarreal on Tuesday in the second leg of their Champions League tie with the Premiership club leading 1-0.
Pires revealed the Spanish side's offer after the first leg but Wenger does not believe the situation will have an impact on the performance of his midfielder.
Wenger added: "Of course it can look disturbing, but I do not think it is because it is always in your interest to perform."
SirStanleyBowles- 04-22-2006
Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham Thierry Henry came off the bench to deny Tottenham victory in the last north London derby at Highbury.
Spurs dominated the first half and took the lead on 66 minutes when Robbie Keane tapped in Edgar Davids' cross.
Arsenal were outraged that Spurs did not stop play for an injury but Henry wiped out the disappointment with a stunning finish six minutes from time.
Edgar Davids' dismissal meant Spurs had to hang on for a draw which leaves the race for fourth still open.
Before the game, Tottenham might have settled for the draw, which means they maintain their four-point advantage over the Gunners, but after having the better of the game, they will leave Highbury disappointed.
Martin Jol's side made a nervous start but after weathering some early pressure, they began to trouble the hosts - largely through the right-wing threat of Aaron Lennon.
The 19-year-old slipped a pass through for Jermain Defoe, whose weak effort was easily saved by Jens Lehmann with the unmarked Edgar Davids screaming for the ball.
Defoe almost redeemed himself moments later when he beat the offside trap, controlled Michael Carrick's lofted ball but saw his venemous shot cannon off Lehmann's face.
Tottenham saved the best of an impressive first-half for the last minute, Carrick beating three Arsenal challenges and Lehmann before shooting into the side netting from a tight angle.
However, with Henry looking ominously on from the bench, Spurs went in at half-time without a goal to show for their dominance.
They continued to press after the break, but when Emmanuel Eboue came on for the injured Philippe Senderos, Arsenal improved.
Robin Van Persie should have given Arsenal the lead on the hour when he easily beat the offside trap but lifted his shot over Robinson and wide.
That was the cue for Arsene Wenger to introduce Henry and Cesc Fabregas, but with Arsenal now looking the more likely to score, Spurs attacked on the break and got the goal their earlier superiority deserved.
Davids broke down the left and slid a perfect ball across for Keane to tap in at the far post.
As Keane celebrated, Arsenal's players took out their anger on Davids, who they felt should not have played on with Gilberto and Eboue lying injured in the centre circle after colliding with each other.
And with the game threatening to boil over, Wenger and Spurs counterpart Jol squared up the touchline.
Arsenal might have eased their frustration within seconds but Jose Reyes' volley was magnificently save by Robinson.
But Henry had Highbury rocking for one final north London derby with a fabulous finish.
Fed by Adebayor, the French striker controlled and finished into the bottom right corner in one breathtaking move.
It could have been much worse for Spurs after Davids' rash tackle on Fabregas earned him a second yellow card, but they held on and go into their final two games with a four-point lead over their rivals, who have a game in hand.

Wenger accuses Tottenham of lying Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger labelled Spurs "liars" in the wake of Saturday's North London derby at Highbury.
Emmanuel Eboue and Gilberto Silva were injured as Edgar Davids set up Robbie Keane for the game's opening goal.
Wenger claimed Spurs should have put the ball out of play, refusing to believe their explanation that they did not see the injured Arsenal duo.
"Their first goal was a disgrace. They lie when they say they didn't see it," said Wenger after the 1-1 draw.
"I can't believe they didn't see it. Of course they lie. I find it very disappointing and it is a shame that a thing like that can happen.
"It is nothing to do with the stakes riding on the game. It is whether you think something is fair or unfair. You expect to get the ball back there.
"We did it on Wednesday against Villarreal in the Champions League every time, even when we sometimes felt it was unfair for them to get it back."
Wenger added: "If that's the way they want to behave then that is their responsibility, but I don't agree with that.
"I don't agree with it and if football goes that way it becomes very petty."
Wenger accepted the result puts Spurs in pole position to seal fourth place.
Arsenal have a game in hand on their North London rivals but trail them by four points.
The Gunners have three matches left but still need Spurs to slip up to finish above them in the table.
"Mathematically it is in their hands now," said Wenger.
"They played very well but we didn't expect to drop two points like that, and in that way."
SirStanleyBowles- 04-23-2006
Jol hits back at furious Wenger Spurs boss Martin Jol has shrugged off accusations of "lying" from Arsenal rival Arsene Wenger after Saturday's North London derby at Highbury.
Wenger was furious Tottenham did not put the ball out of play after Emmanuel Eboue and Gilberto Silva were injured in the build-up to Robbie Keane's goal.
Jol said he did not see the incident, promptly an angry response from Wenger.
But the Dutchman hit back: "I don't know what he is on about. I didn't even see it, I was watching Edgar Davids."
Wenger angrily confronted Jol on the touchline, forcing stewards to intervene, and refused to shake his hand at the final whistle.
But Jol was more concerned about the result and his side's quest for Champions League qualification.
"Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win but for me we deserved something out of this game," said the Spurs boss, whose side are fourth in the table, four points ahead of the Gunners.
"Even the Arsenal fans would agree with me. Hopefully we can win our next two matches and we'll be fourth."
Spurs just need to win their two remaining matches to achieve Jol's objective while Arsenal must win their game in hand and hope their rivals slip up.
"We played marvellously in the first half and created three or four chances," added Jol.
"Aaron Lennon and Robbie Keane did well. We are definitely in the Uefa Cup at least now, but the players were not even celebrating, which is good because it shows me they want to finish fourth.
"Maybe if Arsenal slip up we can do it by getting four points. To go to Highbury isn't easy, because they never seem to concede goals, in the league or the Champions League.
"The fact we did so well makes me a very pleased man."
